AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Women's Cross Country team kicked off the 2012 season with a race against UTSA on Saturday morning in downtown Austin.
Senior Anne Jones placed first overall to pace the Longhorns. Also scoring for UT were redshirt freshmen Alaina Perez (fourth) and Marissa Lee (sixth), junior Melissa Mahoney (11th) and redshirt freshman Marissa Pekarek (12th). Sophomores Rachel Gutknecht and Jessica Clothier and redshirt freshman Colleen Murray also raced.
UT recorded 34 team points, while UTSA won the dual meet with 25 points. Samantha Fish finished second overall to lead the Roadrunners.
Texas held out its top runners from Saturday's race to allow an opportunity for some of its younger members to gain racing experience and demonstrate the work they put in over the summer. Perez, Lee, Pekarek, Clothier and Murray were all competing in their first meet in a Texas uniform.
The Longhorns will next compete Sept. 21 at the Los Angeles XC Invite in Santa Clarita, Calif., before returning to Austin for the Grass Routes Festival on Sept. 29.
