No. 6 Volleyball bounces back with 3-0 sweep of Cincinnati

AUSTIN, Texas -- Sophomore All-America outside hitter Haley Eckerman tied her career high with 23 kills Saturday as the No. 6 Texas Longhorns swept the Cincinnati Bearcats, 3-0 (30-28, 28-26, 25-11), in Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational action. The Horns (7-3) hit .393 as a team, including a .640 clip (16-0-25) in the final set.
Eckerman, who also tied her career high in digs at six, hit .487 (23-4-39) for the match. Junior setter Hannah Allison contributed a season-high 45 assists with two aces. Junior All-American Bailey Webster had 14 kills on 25 attempts with one error for a .520 percentage while sophomore utility Madelyn Hutson hit .571 (4-0-7) with one service ace and two blocks.
The Bearcats (2-9) were led by Jordanne Scott, who had 14 kills with one dig and three blocks.
It was a strong start for the Bearcats, who opened set one with three unanswered points. Later, with the Horns trailing 27-26, a kill from Webster kept the set alive. Back-to-back blocks by Khat Bell and Nicole Dalton secured the set for Texas.
Down 14-13 in the middle of the second set, Texas registered four straight points, highlighted by kills from Webster and freshman middle blocker Molly McCage. Another kill from McCage moved Texas into set point position at 25-24, but two Longhorn service errors kept Cincinnati's hopes alive. Webster and Hutson earned the set with a block for the 2-0 lead in the match.
The Longhorns came out sharp in the third set. Leading 19-10, Texas registered six straight points, sparked by two service aces from Allison. Eckerman notched nine kills in the set as the Longhorns finished off the sweep.
The Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational concludes today with Texas playing UCF at 4 p.m. with Cincinnati and Illinois at 7 p.m. The Texas-UCF match will feature a live broadcast on Longhorn Network. Notes: Eckerman tied her previous career high of 23 kills, set last year on Nov. 9 at Texas Tech...her previous high this season was 19 against Minnesota on Sept. 7...Eckerman has now posted six digs a match three times in her career...Hannah Allison's previous high for assists was 20, posted three times this season...Madelyn Hutson recorded her first service ace of the season.
