STILLWATER, Okla. -- Joe Bergeron scored on a 2-yard run with 29 seconds left lifting No. 12/10 Texas to a thrilling 41-36 win over Oklahoma State Saturday evening in the Big 12 opener for both teams.
Oklahoma State took a 36-34 lead with 2:34 left in the game on a 24-yard field goal from Quinn Sharp, but the Horns (4-0, 1-0) marched down the field in the closing minutes to take the lead for good. On fourth-and-6 from the UT 29, quarterback David Ash threw downfield and hit tight end D.J. Grant for 29 yards.
Ash hit running back Jeremy Hills in the right flat for 5 yards before finding wide receiver Mike Davis for 32 yards to set up first-and-goal at the 5. Bergeron carried 3 yards before finding the end zone on the next play.
Oklahoma State (2-2, 0-1) had one last possession but fell well shy of the end zone. On fourth-and-8 from the OSU 27, Cowboys quarterback J.W. Walsh looked downfield and hit wide receiver Tracy Moore, who commenced a series of laterals that ultimately advanced the ball to the UT 35, but not before time expired.
Oklahoma State struck first inside the game's first minute when Joseph Randle eluded tacklers and raced 69 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 OSU lead. Texas responded on its first drive with a 10-play drive that yielded a 44-yard touchdown pass from Ash to wide receiver Jaxon Shipley to even the game at seven.
A Kenny Vaccaro interception of OSU's Walsh gave the Horns a short field at the OSU 23. Three plays later, Ash connected with Shipley for another touchdown, this one a 20-yard completion to stake Texas to a 14-7 lead. Oklahoma State evened the score at 14 later in the first quarter when Josh Stewart hauled in a 44-yard touchdown pass from Walsh.
Texas, however, regained the lead right away when D.J. Monroe returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and staked the Longhorns to a 21-14 cushion. Oklahoma State drove deep into Texas territory on its next possession before settling for a 23-yard field goal from Sharp that sliced the UT lead to 21-17.
Oklahoma State scored on its opening possession of the second half and sliced the Texas lead to one, as Sharp converted a 38-yard field goal to pull OSU within 21-20. Texas followed by pounding away at Oklahoma State on a 13-play drive that produced another touchdown connection from Ash to Shipley. Ash lofted a fade toward the right corner that Shipley snatched over a Cowboy cornerback to push the Texas lead to 28-20.
Oklahoma State answered after returning the Texas kickoff to the Texas 43. Walsh found John Goodlett for a 20-yard touchdown to cut the Longhorns' lead to 28-26, and UT maintained its lead after OSU's two-point conversion failed.
The Cowboys regained the lead five minutes into the fourth quarter when Randle plunged into the end zone from two yards out to give OSU a 33-28 cushion. But Texas relied heavily upon its ground attack to take the lead right back. Nine plays later, Bergeron plunged in from a yard out to give Texas a 34-33 lead, though the Horns' two-point conversion failed.
