TULSA, Okla. - No. 23 Texas men's tennis defeated No. 25 Washington, 6-1, on Saturday at the University of Tulsa's Case Tennis Center.
The Longhorns won the doubles point and five of the six singles points to begin the dual match season 2-0. Texas gives Washington (2-1) its first loss of the season a day after the Huskies defeated No. 17 Tulsa on its home court.
"We remained pretty calm and steady throughout singles and kept the pressure on them most of the match," head coach Michael Center said. "Overall, it was a good win against a really good team - something to build on."
Center switched up his doubles rotation for the first time this season, pairing the 13th-ranked team of Chris Camillone and David Holiner with different partners. Camillone made his way to an 8-5 win with freshman Nick Naumann and Holiner also won 8-5 with senior Daniel Whitehead.
"Camillone and Naumann are really good athletes - they are really quick when playing together," Center said. "I knew that David [Holiner] and Daniel [Whitehead] have played well together in the past, and that proved true today. I was really pleased with both teams today."
The Longhorns clinched the doubles point before Andrew Korinek and Alex Hilliard finished their match against Washington's Jeff Hawke and Viktor Farkas - suspended at 6-7.
Texas' No. 1 singles player, No. 31 Soren Hess-Olesen, returned for the first time this spring after recovering from injury and showed signs of improvement in a loss to UW's Kyle McMorrow in three sets (2-6, 7-6, 6-4).
"I was really happy with what I saw out of Soren - the way he competed," Center said. "He lost a tough match in which he had some opportunities to win. He hadn't played a match in a while and missed some first serves today, but overall I was really pleased with what I saw. His overall game is really improving."
Texas clinched the team win after Sudanwa Sitaram defeated Emmett Egger (3-6, 6-3, 6-2) to give Texas the fourth and deciding point in the match. Sitaram now has a season record of 9-7, including a 1-0 mark in No. 2 singles.
No. 34 Daniel Whitehead, No. 98 Nick Naumann, Andrew Korinek and Lloyd Glasspool all improved to 2-0 in dual match singles competition with wins on Saturday.
The Longhorns will face No. 17 Tulsa tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT at the indoor Case Center.
