Junior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle scores in the 48th and 50th minutes to lead the Longhorns over the Bears on Friday night in Austin.
AUSTIN, Texas – Sharis Lachappelle picked up her third and fourth goals of the season to lift Texas Soccer over the No. 23 Baylor Bears, 2-1, on Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
After 47 minutes of scoreless play, Lachappelle netted two goals in less than two minutes to give the Longhorns the edge they would need after Baylor halved the deficit with less than four minutes to play.
Lachappelle's first goal came in the 48th minute. Chantale Campbell lined up to take the second of back-to-back corners for Texas on the left side. Campbell crossed the ball into the box and Lachappelle got her head on it and put it away between Baylor goalie Michelle Kloss and the near post. The goal was the first surrendered by the Bears on the road since Nov. 18, 2012 against North Carolina.
Lachappelle was back in the 50th minute. Keeper Abby Smith launched a kick downfield that found the head of Lindsey Meyer near midfield. Meyer flicked the ball to Gabby Zarnegar running down the right side before Zarnegar sent a cross into the box. Lachappelle picked it up on the bounce and put in a left-footed shot to put Texas up a pair.
Baylor answered in the 87th minute with a goal from Natalie Huggins after she redirected a rebound in the six-yard box and got past Smith. But the Bears were unable to muster another score in the closing three minutes and Texas moves on with its fourth conference win.
Five matches into their eight-game Big 12 season, the Longhorns (10-4-1, 4-1-0) sit second in the team standings, half a game behind West Virginia.
Texas took four of the first six shots in the game with Lachappelle nearly putting UT up by a goal in the 12th minute with a shot from 30 yards out that sailed just above the crossbar. The teams finished the game with 11 shots apiece with the Longhorns holding a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Smith and Kloss each recorded three saves and got support from their back lines with one team save each.
The Longhorns return to action next weekend with a home-and-away series. Texas will travel to Stillwater, Okla., to take on Oklahoma State on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. Central before returning home to host Oklahoma on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. Sunday's match, UT's final regular-season home game, will also celebrate the careers of seniors Zarnegar and Brenda Saucedo.
