FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The No. 14 Texas Women's Track & Field team closed out the Tyson Invitational in impressive fashion with a victory in the 4x400-meter relay in the Longhorns' last tune-up before the Big 12 Championships Feb 22-23.
The foursome of Danielle Dowie, Briana Nelson, Kendra Chambers and Courtney Okolo clocked a 3:30.95, the fifth-fastest time in school history, to win the invitational race. Texas' 4x400m relay continues to move up in the UT record books after posting the sixth-fastest time at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville two weeks ago.
"The mile relay team was just awesome today," said interim head coach Rose Brimmer. "I continue to be so impressed with our quarter-milers' progression. We have six girls who I know can get it done in that race on any given day and they have been phenomenal so far this season."
Texas also raced a team in the collegiate 4x400m relay. The squad of Melissa Gonzalez, Alicia Peterson, Chalonda Goodman and Chamique Francis finished 11th in 3:43.90.
Seven Longhorns competed in the 200-meter and were led by junior Christy Udoh, who placed sixth in 23.68. Freshman Courtney Okolo and senior Chalonda Goodman finished in 13th (23.95) and 15th (23.97), just two-hundredths of a second apart. Junior Danielle Dowie, who on Friday took more than a second off her personal best in the 400-meter invitational, took 21st in 24.13. Junior Briana Nelson crossed 36th (24.47), while freshmen Kiersten Duncan and Bernice Bamgbade came in 65th (season-best 25.28) and 69th (25.38), respectively.
The Longhorns had a pair of competitors in the invitational high jump in junior Shanay Briscoe and senior Alicia Peterson. The duo tied for eighth with clearances of 5-7.75 (1.72m).
WASHINGTON HUSKY CLASSIC
Texas also raced competitors in four distance events on day two of the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.
Three Longhorns posted new personal bests in their respective events on Saturday at Dempsey Indoor. The day began with redshirt freshman Connor Ward, who placed 12th in the Mile with a time of 4:58.45, the first sub-5:00 mark of her Longhorn career in the event. Junior Brittany Marches and sophomore Jessica Harper also registered new top personal marks in the collegiate 3,000-meter, with Marches crossing in 9:49.94 for 23rd and Ward finishing in 10:06.80 for 38th.
In the collegiate 800-meter, junior Katie Hoaldridge ran a 2:13.93 for 21st.
Texas will train for two weeks before heading to Ames, Iowa, for the Big 12 Indoor Championships Feb. 22-23.
