Tyson Invitational Results | Husky Classic Results
Joe Stilin and Ryan Dohner posted the top two 3,000-meter times in school history at the Husky Classic and Hayden Baillio secured his fourth shot put victory of the indoor season at the Tyson Invitational to highlight Saturday's performances of the Men's Track and Field team.
For the 11th-ranked Longhorns, it was their final weekend of competition before the Big 12 Indoor Championships, which get underway in less than two weeks.
Most of the top distance runners in the nation were in Seattle for the Husky Classic and the times proved it.
Stilin, who set the school record in the mile (3:58.66) two weeks ago at the Razorback Team Invitational, clocked a time of 7:56.07 in the 3,000-meter invitational which was 15th in an elite 40-man field on the second and final day of the non team-scored meet. Dohner's time of 7:58.80 was 21st.
Dohner already owned the third-best time in school history (8:00.24 at the 2012 SPIRE Invitational) and that mark wasn't too far off Jake Morse's UT record of 7:59.21, set at the 2008 New Balance Collegiate.
"Dohner breaks the school record in his second 3,000 of the year and Stilin does it in his first," head coach Bubba Thornton said. "There was a feeling of disappointment because of higher expectations. But as I watched different events and look at where we are in the conference, we're in pretty shape. We have one of the toughest conferences in the country in the distance events."
Prior to that 3,000-meter invitational, there were only five times in the nation this season under 7:59, but 22 in this race.
The top 16 marks in each individual event advance to next month's NCAA Indoor Championships.
Seniors Patrick McGregor and Kyle Merber competed in the mile invitational and finished 13th (4:01.06) and 17th (4:02.49), respectively, in a 26-man field which featured a number of professionals.
"We recognize the talent in these races but when we get to a national setting there's a lot of fantasy in those marks," Thornton said. "We feel our guys ran closer to their potential than some of those times."
Craig Lutz ran in the regular draw of the 3,000 meters and bettered his personal best by more than six seconds with a time of 8:08.70.
Stilin, Dohner, Lutz and Austin Bussing all rank among the top 15 in the 3,000 on the Big 12 performance list.
While the most of the distance unit was in Seattle, many of the field-event performers spent the last two days at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
Baillio's winning mark of 61 feet (18.59m) in Saturday's shot put was shy of his season best, but he remained perfect on the year in four starts.
Will Spence produced the best effort of his career in the shot put with a toss of 60-6 3/4 (18.46m) to claim fourth place.
The Horns also got a season-best pole vault from freshman Reese Watson and the longest leap of the year by Jarard Bruner in the triple jump.
Watson cleared 17-3 (5.26m) to finish second, while Bruner's mark of 49-3 1/2 (15.02m) was good for third.
Mark Pinales had his personal-best effort in the 3,000 meters, clocking a time of 8:18.25 to claim third in the college race.
David Anamosa improved in the 800 for the third time this season, posting a personal-best time of 1:53.64.
One day after matching his school record (7.66) in the 60-meter hurdles, Keiron Stewart helped the 4x400-meter relay unit post a season-best time of 3:11.54.
Josh Brudnick, Kyle Thompson and Zack Bilderback joined Stewart on the relay team.
"We had a lot of guys with personal bests, but we don't want to be satisfied," Thornton said. "We had two good meets. Now we have 10 days to get ready for the conference meet."
The Big 12 meet is scheduled for Feb. 22-23 in Ames, Iowa.
