Baseball drops Big 12 opener to Texas Tech, 1-0

AUSTIN, Texas - Jarrard Poteete's solo home run to right was the only scoring needed Friday as the Texas Tech Red Raiders earned a 1-0 win over the Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 opener for both teams at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Dominic Moreno threw seven scoreless innings for Texas Tech (13-7, 1-0) to snap the Longhorns' five-game winning streak while Jerad McCrummen earned the save with two scoreless innings, allowing two hits. Parker French threw six scoreless innings and giving up just two hits. Josh Urban threw 1 2/3 no-hit innings with all five outs coming by strikeout for the Longhorns.
Moreno and McCrummen kept the Longhorns (11-6, 0-1) off the scoreboard despite Texas recording seven hits in the game.
After Ty Marlow entered the game for French in the seventh, Poteete hit the first pitch off Marlow to right field for the one-out homer. Texas had a chance in the ninth after Mark Payton led off with a single up the middle. C.J Hinojosa then attempted a sacrifice bunt, but avoided the tag by McCrummen to put runners at first and second. Alex Silver in a pinch-hit role then laid down a bunt to move Payton and Hinojosa to second and third. McCrummen then struck out Jacob Felts and coaxed pinch-hitter Matt Moynihan into a groundout to second for the win.

Notes: This was the first 1-0 shutout loss by Texas since a similar loss last season on March 11 in the first game of a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount...Texas is now 11-6 all-time in Big 12 openers...Mark Payton had a streak snapped where he had reached base safely in 10 straight plate appearances...C.J Hinojosa extended his team-high hitting streak to eight games with a 1-for-4 night...Parker French now has a 1.31 ERA in 34 1/3 innings this season.

On the opportunities of the Texas team tonight: There were a lot of opportunities for us tonight, but as I have always said baseball is a difficult, cruel game yet people think I am kidding...tonight was proof.
On the hard hits by Texas: Five times the ball went to someone. It was a tough loss, but hats off to their pitcher; he did a great job on the zone, and when we hit him it did not take him off his game. He kept repeating. He did a great job with all of that and his teammates on defense did a great job behind him.
On the Longhorns' play tonight: I think they played under control. I thought they took good at-bats throughout the game, not just in any one inning when we were flat like we would in the beginning of the year; we would go flat with no energy for three or four innings. You did not see that tonight.
On the lesson of the game: The truth of it is, when you do your best which I think our team did it breaks your heart when you lose like that, but now we will see if we have the grit to continue to believe in ourselves and stay with the plan or are going to try harder to win the game. If we try harder, we will lose the game. If we come back with our game plan, maintain our self-control and play the game the way the team has been performing, we will give ourselves the best possible chance to win.
On the pitching of Josh Urban: He has worked really hard to get himself in the best shape of his life and he believes that he should win because he has put in the time and effort, and that confidence showed tonight.

On his efforts in the fourth inning: I got two quick outs and over threw a pitch. It got me out of my rhythm to where I started to work too fast. I had trouble locating because I was working too fast. When I go out there, I want to compete at my hardest. I want to throw the ball to the mitt and give the team a chance to win. That is my job as a starting pitcher, to keep the team in the game by competing at my hardest. We will be back tomorrow, don't worry. This team has a lot of experience; we have been through a lot together. We will put this one behind us pretty quickly.
On Josh Urban: I was not surprised at all. He has worked his tail off all season, he has done well in the off-season and in the scrimmages. He can pinpoint and that is what he did tonight, he threw like the typical Josh that we see in practice.
