SAN MARCOS, Texas - Zack Bilderback (400 meters), Austin Bussing (1,500 meters), Patrick McGregor (800 meters) and Will Spence (shot put) each claimed victories to lead the fourth-ranked Men's Track and Field team to a second-place finish at Saturday's Texas State Elite Meet.
Bussing (3:48.55) and McGregor (1:49.57) each posted personal bests for the Longhorns who rolled up 147.50 points, but were edged in the team scoring column by 12th-ranked UCLA which tallied 149 in the season-opening 18-event meet.
Texas State was third with 96.50 points and second-ranked Arkansas was fourth with 84.50.
Just two weeks removed from the NCAA Indoor Championships, many of the top-ranked athletes were not entered in their specialty events.
Texas All-American Keiron Stewart did not compete in the 110-meter hurdles and Ryan Crouser was not entered in the shot put, one of the two events he has earned All-America honors.
But for many Longhorns it was their first competition since winning the Big 12 Indoor Championship four weeks ago.
Along with the four victories, the Longhorns had a second-place showing by Casey Wicker in the pole vault. He cleared a personal-best 17-2 3/4 (5.25m).
Trevor Van Ackeren, a senior transfer from Princeton who became eligible for outdoors, was second in the 3,000 meters in 8:15.58.
Josh Brudnick was third in the 400-meter hurdles in a career-best time of 52.53.
Will Spence's win in the shot put came on a personal-best toss of 59-7 (18.16m) and Hayden Baillio was fourth in the hammer throw with a career-best toss of 171-8 (52.33m).
"It was a great meet for us," said head coach Bubba Thornton. "A nice way to get the season started against some strong competition. Now we are looking forward to doing few more things at the Texas Relays."
The Longhorns will serve as host to the 86th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, which start Wednesday and continue until Saturday.
