Baseball wins series with 3-2 walk-off win against UC Santa Barbara

AUSTIN, Texas - Freshman shortstop C.J Hinojosa (Spring/Klein Collins HS) drilled a two-out RBI double to right in the bottom of the ninth Saturday as the Texas Longhorns used a 3-2 walk-off victory to earn the series win against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (9-5) have won three straight and look for the series sweep tomorrow in a noon start against the Gauchos (8-6).
It was Hinojosa's second walk-off hit of the season (Feb. 23 vs. Nebraska).
Ty Marlow (Giddings/Giddings HS) earned his first collegiate win with 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, allowing only one hit. Dillon Peters had another strong start for the Longhorns with 5 2/3 innings, giving up only two runs (one earned) on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Jackson Morrow led off the UCSB second with a double and later scored from third on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Robby Nesovic. The Longhorns tied it in the third when Erich Weiss belted his 12th career triple to left center and scored on Mark Payton's RBI double.
Brooks Marlow tripled to lead off the Texas fifth, but UCSB starter Justin Jacome held off the Horns to keep it a 1-1 score. Jacome finished with the no-decision, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Peters walked back-to-back Gauchos with two outs in the sixth before giving way to Marlow. Nesovic then cranked an 0-2 pitch from Marlow to left for a double to put the Gauchos ahead, 2-1. Texas answered in the bottom half of the seventh with two outs. Weston Hall drew a walk, followed by a walk to pinch-hitter Matt Moynihan. After Hall and Moynihan executed a double steal, Weiss hit a slow grounder to third and beat out the throw by a step for the infield single as Hall scored.
With two outs in the ninth and Weiss at first, Payton drew a walk to get to Hinojosa. With two strikes against the freshman, he then belted a double to deep right for the win.

On today's game: We've talked quite a bit about the chemistry of the team and have claimed that it is all right. And it is. The team has a good chemistry about it and a good spirit. Now we are trying to work on the teamwork element, which is a little harder to get. Today was a good example of teamwork in action and the importance of every player on the roster.
On C.J Hinojosa's walk-off double: He let the pitches go that he wasn't looking for and in a very calm and mature way stayed zeroed in on the zone he wanted to hit out of and got a pitch in that zone and hit it where it was pitched. I think it is testimony to his maturity. I keep referring to him as an old soul, but I'm convinced he has played this game in the sky in another lifetime.

On being the hero: I don't really see myself as the hero. I was just lucky enough to get the opportunity again. Any of these guys could have gone up there and accomplished the same thing, it just happened to be me this time.

On retiring ten straight after giving up a double to his first batter: I definitely had some jitters after the double, but I try not to show much emotion out there on the mound. Just try to hit the mitt and trust the coaches and my catcher, and do my job.

On pulling out a true team win: It's awesome. It shows that we can't just rely on one person and that the whole team has to be involved, and that happened today. And it shows that we all want to win and have the drive to win.
