Women's Golf fights bitter and blustery conditions at Big 12 Championship

RHODES, Iowa -- Encumbered by steady winds of 30 miles per hour and a real-feel temperature topping out at 30 degrees, the Texas Women's Golf team posted a 39-over-par 327 in Friday's opening round of the Big 12 Championship at The Harvester. Sophomore Bertine Strauss led the Longhorns with a first-round scorecard of 8-over 80 to tie for ninth place.
With bitterly cold conditions plaguing the already wet Harvester course after Thursday's rain showers, scores averaged 82.22 for the 45-player field.
Strauss began her round with back-to-back bogeys. After a pair of ensuing pars, she triple bogeyed the par-4 fifth hole to reach 5-over. Strauss made the turn at +7 with two more pars and as many bogeys over the next four holes.
With three straight pars to begin the back nine, Strauss went bogey-birdie-bogey on Nos. 13-15 to remain at +8. She finished with another stretch of three pars, the most any Longhorn was able to string together.
Senior Desiree Dubreuil and freshman Tezira Abe finished one stroke behind Strauss to tie for 15th place at 9-over. Like Strauss, Dubreuil's longest stretch of pars came at Nos. 10-12. Abe's two birdies were the most by anyone clad in burnt orange.
Seniors Katelyn Sepmoree (85) and Madison Pressel (86) rounded out the Texas contingent in ties for 34th and 40th places, respectively.
With a 28-over 316, Texas Tech holds a one-stroke lead over Oklahoma State (317). Baylor is three back at 319 for third place.
Tee times for Saturday's second round will be available later this evening at Golfstatresults.com.
POST-ROUND COMMENTS
Texas Head Coach Martha Richards
On today's round: I thought overall we stayed really patient. We fought really hard all day. We made a couple of mistakes on things we could control - there were so many variables out there today that you couldn't (control) - and I think we gave just a few too many away when we had the chance to take advantage of something. I'm really proud of them, they hit a lot of good golf shots given the conditions. It was just tough out there, and you never know what kind of bounces and breaks you're going to get. We didn't get the best ones today, but maybe they'll pan out and be better for us the next two days.
On looking ahead to Saturday's second round: Tomorrow's going to be totally different, from what I understand weather-wise. The golf course is going to be a little drier, not as much wind. It was howling out there today. We don't really change our strategy. We just need to bear down and not make the mistakes that we can control. Tomorrow will be a day that should allow us to take advantage when we get good opportunities.
Sophomore Bertine Strauss
On today's round: I started ok the first few holes, then I made a triple on the fifth hole that set me back a bit. I shot 1-over on the back nine, and I'm pretty happy with that given today's conditions.
