RHODES, Iowa -- Sophomore Bertine Strauss sank three straight birdie putts on her closing holes in Saturday's second round of the Big 12 Women's Golf Championship to climb into a tie for fourth place at 5-over-par 149. As a team, Texas made a dramatic 30-stroke difference between the first two rounds at The Harvester and posted a 9-over 297 on the leaderboard. The Longhorns enter Sunday's final day of the league championship in seventh place at 48-over 624 (+48).
Saturday's weather conditions were as drastic as Texas' stroke differential, as calm winds, cloudless skies and temperatures in the upper 40s fell upon the greater Des Moines area. The Longhorns faced steady winds of 30 miles per hour and a real-feel temperature that peaked at 30 degrees on Friday. Saturday's average scorecard was 74.56, nearly eight strokes lower than Friday's 82.22 average.
After an opening par, Strauss made her first of five birdies with a 15-foot putt. Following a stretch of four more pars, Strauss connected from five feet and dipped to 2-under. A bogey ensued two holes later on No. 9 when after she failed to get up-and-down, and a three-putt on No. 12 was the source of her second bogey. Feeling more confident with her putter as the day went on, Strauss birdied the 16th and 17th holes with lengthy 25-foot putts, and she closed her round with a final 15-foot birdie putt at 18.
Senior Desiree Dubreuil carded a 76 in her second round to bring her 36-hole total to 157 for a share of 26th place. Senior Katelyn Sepmoree (85-77) is five strokes back and tied for 33rd along with Texas freshman Tezira Abe (81-81).
Senior Madison Pressel rallied from an opening-round 88 with Texas' second-lowest score of 75 on Saturday and is in 39th place at 19-over 163.
Baylor holds a slim one-stroke advantage on the team leaderboard at 29-over 605 (319-286). Host Iowa State (320-286=606) and Oklahoma State (317-289) are tied for second.

POST-ROUND COMMENTS
Texas Head Coach Martha Richards
On today's round: The conditions today were light years better. Mentally, we came prepared to play, and we learned yesterday that we needed to be prepared to face anything today. We've actually now played a round of golf on the golf course - we couldn't even play our practice round (due to weather and conditions), we only played about six holes and then walked the course. So our scores will continue to improve as we gain familiarity with the golf course.
