AUSTIN, Texas - No. 7 Texas Women's Track & Field team wrapped up the outdoor regular season with the Longhorn Invitational on a sunny Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
In addition to capitalizing on the final opportunity for competition leading up to the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, the Longhorns used the day's meet to focus on improving individual marks to qualify for the West Regional.
"Our goal today was to get in some solid races and a good workout before the conference meet," interim head coach Rose Brimmer said. "It was great to be home and not have to get on the road with some important academic weeks coming up for the girls. We have a couple weeks of training up next and I feel like we'll be in a position to peak at the right time heading into the championships season."
The Longhorns participated in the sprints and field events on Saturday with Texas' distance group contending at the Mt. SAC Relays this weekend in Walnut. Calif.
In one of the more competitive races of the day, Briana Nelson was the top collegiate finisher in the 400 meters and was fourth overall. Her time of 52.72 seconds was a season best, the second fastest time run by a Longhorn this season, the No. 10 time in the West Region and the No. 13 mark nationally. Danielle Dowie, racing in her first open 400 of the outdoor season, finished fifth and posted a new collegiate personal best of 53.00, which ranks 12th in the region.
Dowie was also the top finisher among seven Texas competitors in the 200m, crossing first among collegians and third overall in 23.33. Christy Udoh was just behind in fourth with a time of 23.38 and Chalonda Goodman recorded fifth in 23.76.
In the 100m, Goodman led a troupe of six Longhorns, crossing in 11.47 for the win. Udoh (11.47) and Morgan Snow (11.51) finished second and third.
Snow and Melissa Gonzalez finished 1-2 in the 100m hurdles, notching marks of 13.31 and 14.30. Gonzalez won the 400m hurdles in a time of 1:00.01, followed closely by Chamique Francis, who ran a personal-best 1:01.43 for second place.
Also recording victories on the day were Kaitlin Petrillose in pole vault (13-3.75/4.06m) and A'Lexus Brannon in long jump (20-1.75/6.14m).
The Big 12 Championships will be contended May 3-5 in Waco. Texas will then play host to the West Region meet May 23-25, where the region's top 48 in each event will compete to earn a spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.
