LUBBOCK, Texas - Two home runs from senior Taylor Hoagland carried No. 7/7 Texas past Texas Tech 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field. In the circle, senior Kim Bruins did her part for the Longhorns (41-6, 11-2 Big 12), scattering four hits while improving to 9-0 this season.
Hoagland's two home runs increased her career total to 57, moving her past Amber Flores (Oklahoma/56/2007-10) and Megan Gibson (Texas A&M/56/2005-08) for sole possession of second on the all-time Big 12 chart. Hoagland trails only Jessica Shults (Oklahoma/60/2010-present) for the career conference mark.
Bruins surrendered one run and three walks while striking out five in the complete-game performance. Gretchen Aucoin (6-3) took the loss and went five-plus innings for the Red Raiders, yielding three runs on six hits and striking out four. Cara Custer tossed one inning and gave up an unearned run on two hits and a whiff. Brittany Talley completed the Texas Tech pitching effort, throwing the seventh and allowing two hits and fanning one.
Much like in game one Friday, Texas again struck first, scoring once in the opening inning with a Hoagland long ball to lead off the game.
Texas Tech (29-23, 3-11 Big 12) responded with its own solo home run in the bottom of the inning as Mikey Kenney hit one to center field.
After both teams went quietly in the second, another Hoagland solo homer in the top of the third put the Longhorns back ahead, 2-1. It was Hoagland's third multiple-home run game of the season and seventh of her career.
The Red Raiders had a chance to answer in the bottom of the third, but could not convert. Sydnie Tapia led off with a walk and stole second base, but a strikeout, groundout and pop out left her stranded.
Neither team mounted another threat until the top of the sixth, when Texas added two runs to go ahead 4-1. Junior Brejae Washington led off with a single, stole second base and came home on a one-out single up the middle from junior Mandy Ogle. Freshman pinch runner Rachel Scott entered for Ogle and moved to second base on a groundout. With two outs, senior Torie Schmidt rolled a grounder to the second baseman, who threw wide to first base, allowing Scott to come around and score to make it a 4-1 contest. A groundout ended the threat.
In the bottom of the sixth, Bruins hit Katelyn Williams with a pitch with one out. Sandy James hit into a fielder's choice as freshman second baseman Stephanie Ceo tossed to second for the force on Williams, but a wild throw from junior shortstop Taylor Thom back to first allowed James to move to second base with two outs. Bruins ended the threat with a strikeout looking of Adriana Perez.
After getting the first two outs in the seventh, Bruins allowed a single to right from Lexie Elkins and walked Katibeth King before a Shelby Johnson strikeout ended the contest.
The teams complete the series Sunday with a noon contest.
