AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Women's Track & Field team will look to defend its 2012 Big 12 Outdoor crown when it travels to Waco this weekend for the 2013 edition of the annual league meet. The three-day event will be held May 3-5 at the Hart-Patterson Track & Field Complex.
In addition to the No. 10 Longhorns, five other Big 12 squads are currently ranked in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Top 25 on the women's side. They include No. 2 Kansas, No. 16 Iowa State, No. 17 Texas Tech, No. 21 Baylor and No. 22 Oklahoma.
Texas won its league-leading seventh outdoor conference championship in 2012 with 139 points, topping Kansas by 9 ½ points and ending Texas A&M's streak of five straight team titles. UT was led by individual victories from Shanay Briscoe, Danielle Dowie and Natasha Masterson, who are back for the Longhorns in 2013.
Briscoe's high jump win was UT's fourth consecutive in the event and sixth in the last seven years at the Big 12 Outdoor meet. Dowie became the first Longhorn to win the 400-meter hurdles since 2006 when UT had claimed eight straight, and Masterson took home the first outdoor pole vault conference championship in Texas program history.
UT enters the 2013 outdoor championships season with four Big 12-leading individual marks from Courtney Okolo (400 meters, 52.52), Morgan Snow (100-meter hurdles 12.90), Dowie (400-meter hurdles, 56.58) and Briscoe (high jump, 6-0/1.83m) along with conference-best times in the 4x400-meter relay (3:27.65) and 4x100-meter relay (43.59). Texas also has 18 additional marks that sit in the league's top five, including the second, third and fourth-fastest times in the 400m.
Each of the Longhorns' conference-topping times also cracks the top 10 nationally. The Mile relay of Dowie, Briana Nelson, Kendra Chambers and Okolo is ranked third, while the 4x100m relay of Snow, Christy Udoh, Dowie and Chalonda Goodman is tied for fourth. Snow is fourth in the sprint hurdles and Dowie is tied for sixth in the long hurdles. Okolo is seventh in the 400m and Briscoe is tied for 10th in high jump.
The conference meet kicks off the outdoor championships season and will be the final tune-up and qualifying opportunity for Texas leading up to the NCAA West Regional, which will be held in Austin May 23-25. The region's top 48 in each individual event and top 24 in each relay will advance to the regional meet, with the top 24 individuals and top 12 relays then moving on to June's NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
