WACO, Texas - Texas freshman Johannes Hock is three-quarters of the way toward completing the league multi-event sweep after posting an impressive decathlon total of 4,222 points Friday during the opening day of the Big 12 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Baylor.
In his first collegiate decathlon, Hock posted the top mark in the 100 and 400 meters, shot put and long jump, and was second in the high jump.
"I felt really good before the competition started," Hock said. "I have higher expectations here than I did at indoors. The 100 and long jump went pretty much perfectly, about as good as they can."
Hock, who leads fellow freshman and second-place Reinis Kregers of Kansas State (3,838) by nearly 400 points, didn't let up after clocking a personal-best 10.78 seconds in the 100 and a best-ever 24-5 3/4 (7.46m) in the long jump, though that leap was aided by a 3.7 meters-per-second wind. He decided to pass on his final two attempts.
He was less than four inches off a career best in the shot put with a toss of 50-6 1/4 (15.40m) and cleared 6-4 1/4 (1.94m) in the high jump, 1 1/4 inches off a career best.
Hock, a native of Cologne, Germany, who joined the team this semester, had plenty left in the tank for the 400 meters, the fifth and final event of the day. He clocked a 49.80 and led from start to finish in his heat.
"It was hard, but I've been doing a lot of running this season," Hock said. "I knew I'm in better shape than I've been for the 400."
Teammate Jake Wohlford was third in the 400 meters (50.07) and had the second-fastest 100-meter time (10.81w). He posted 3,577 points on the day and sits in sixth place.
Ethan Wilkins of Iowa State is third with 3,793 and Devin Dick of Kansas State is fourth (3,722). Dick was the runner-up to Hock in the heptathlon at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in February.
Hock hopes to mirror his performance from that two-day meet when he led from start to finish.
"It was a really good day for me and I'm optimistic about tomorrow," said Hock.
The eighth-ranked Longhorns, who are second in the team standings, also picked up three points in the hammer throw, not one of their stronger events. Clint Harris finished seventh with a personal-best toss of 173-11 (53.00m) and Blake Jakobsson was eighth with a career-best mark of 173-1 (52.76m) in one of only two completed men's events.
The other was the 10,000 meters, which saw the Longhorns collect 11 of their 14 points.
Ryan Dohner was third in a time of 29:20.19 and Craig Lutz was fourth in a personal-best 29:22.75. Rory Tunningley finished just out of the scoring column. He clocked a 30:03.68 and was 10th.
Dohner collected his ninth All-Big 12 honor (top eight) and Lutz earned his third.
Only six of the nine men's team earned points Friday. Oklahoma leads with 31. Oklahoma State is third (13) and Iowa State fourth (12).
Saturday's action, which also features prelims of the running events and a number of field events, gets underway at 10 a.m. with the decathlon.
The three-day meet concludes Sunday.
