Due partly to its sixth-place finish at last week's NCAA Outdoor Championships, the Men's Track and Field team was fifth in the standings for the John McDonnell Division I Men's Program of the Year Award.
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) made the announcement Tuesday.
The award is bestowed to the most outstanding cross country/track & field programs in each of the NCAA's three divisions and for each gender. The award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year — spanning the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field seasons — based on the institution's finish at the NCAA Championships.
The Longhorns were ninth last fall at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, the third-straight year of improvement at that meet, and tied for 23rd at the national indoor meet in March.
Texas had its second-best showing in the five-year history of the McDonnell award. The Horns were third last year.
The USTFCCCA also officially announced outdoor All-America honors on Monday with four Longhorns earning a spot on the first team after scoring at the four-day NCAA meet in Eugene, Ore.
In all, 14 athletes secured first team, second team or honorable mention All-America honors.
First-team USTFCCCA All-America honors are awarded to those who earn any portion of a team point at the national championships, or reach an eight-entrant final. Second-team honors are handed out to those whose final placing in the national meet range from ninth to 16th place.
Those who participated at the final site but did not place in the meet's top 16 are listed as honorable mention for the All-America award.
