Men's Track and Field will be well-represented in Des Moines, Iowa, this week at the 2013 USA Outdoor Championships as nine current and former members of the program will be competing on the campus of Drake University.
The action is set to begin Thursday and will run through Sunday at Drake Stadium as the very best of track and field athletes at the college and professional levels in will be competing.
The top three finishers in each event that have met the "A" qualifying standard for the IAAF World Championships will earn the right to represent the U.S. in the August event in Moscow, Russia.
A group of five Longhorns from this year's team will be participating, including All-Americans Isaac Murphy and Ryan Crouser.
Murphy, who finished fourth in the decathlon at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships at the University of Oregon, kicks off the action on Thursday. The senior's total of 8,086 points was the fourth-best mark in school history.
Crouser, a five-time All-American, will compete against the country's best in the shot put after winning the national championship in the event in a dramatic fashion two weeks ago. After fouling the first two throws of the competition, Crouser unleashed a throw of 66 feet, 7 3/4 inches (20.31m), which ended up being the winning mark.
Joining Crouser in the shot put will be senior Hayden Baillio, who finished 12th in the event at the NCAAs.
A pair of distance runners will be in action this weekend with departing seniors Joe Stilin (5,000 meters) and Austin Bussing (steeplechase) scheduled to run.
Stilin set two Texas records during the indoor season with a mile time of 3:56.66 and 3,000m time of 7:53.15. Bussing wrapped up his career with three all-league honors, which included second place in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2013 Big 12 Championship.
Former Longhorn All-Americans Trey Hardee (decathlon), Leo Manzano (1,500 meters), and Jacob Thormaehlen (shot put) will also be competing.
Since Hardee has already qualified for the World Championships, he will take part in select number of decathlon events.
Texas volunteer assistant coach Miller Moss, who was All-American at Clemson, will also be participating in the decathlon.
Fans can follow USA Championships action on ESPN2 (Friday) or the NBC family of networks (Saturday and Sunday). Portions of the meet not covered live on TV can be viewed on USATF.TV, which will be launched this week.
