BARCELONA, Spain – Texas-Ex Jimmy Feigen ran down the reigning Olympic gold medalist and won a silver medal in the 100-meter freestyle Thursday at the FINA World Championships.
Representing the United States, Feigen (San Antonio, Texas) won the silver medal in a personal-best time of 47.82 seconds. Australia's James Magnussen, the event's silver medalist at the London Olympics, won the gold in 47.71. American Nathan Adrian, the gold medalist in London, won the bronze in 47.84.
Feigen swam a controlled opening 50 meters and hit the first wall in sixth place at 22.91. The former NCAA champion split 24.91 in the final 50 meters to earn his place on the awards podium.
UT's record holder in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events, Feigen collects his first individual medal at a World Championship or Olympic meet. Feigen helped the Americans to a silver medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay last summer at the London Olympics. Feigen joined former Texas teammate Ricky Berens to win silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay earlier this week at the World Championships.
Feigen is the first Longhorn to medal in the 100m freestyle at a World Championship meet since 1994, when Gary Hall, Jr. won silver.
