Armstrong advances to men’s shot put final at IAAF World Championships

MOSCOW - Dylan Armstrong qualified for the finals of the men's shot put on Thursday at the IAAF World Championships. He posted a mark of 20.39 meters (66-10.75) on his second attempt in qualification to place fourth in his flight and seventh overall and earn a spot in Friday's final.
Armstrong, a Canada native, is competing for the fourth time in shot put and fifth time overall at the world outdoor meet. His best finish came in 2011 edition of the meet when he won the silver medal with a toss of 21.64m. Coming off a fourth-place finish in the shot put at the 2012 London Olympics, he qualified for Moscow by placing second at the Canadian Track & Field Championships in June.
Fellow Texas Exes Leo Manzano and Samyr Laine will also be in competition tomorrow. Manzano will race in the semifinals of the 1,500 meters, while Samyr Laine will contend in the qualification round of the triple jump.
Also taking place tomorrow will be the first-round heats of the 4x400m relay. UT newcomer Ashley Spencer is one of six in the U.S. pool for the event.
