AUSTIN, Texas --Texas Soccer officially kicked off the 2013 campaign on Friday night with a 6-1 exhibition victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi inside Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field. Junior Sharis Lachappelle scored two goals, sophomore Lindsey Meyer added a goal and a pair of assists and sophomore Kelsey Shimmick recorded two assists to lead the offense.
The Longhorns dominated possession, outshooting the Islanders 24-2 and placing 13 shots on goal to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's two. UT sophomore goalkeeper Abby Smith and junior goalkeeper Ava Vogel combined for one save, while Audrey Baldwin registered seven saves for the Islanders.
Sophomore Chantale Campbell put the Longhorns on the board first in the 32nd minute, when her shot deflected off Baldwin's hands and rolled into the side of the goal at 31:13. Meyer was credited with the assist on the play.
Less than four minutes later at the 34:35 mark, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi responded with its lone goal on a 35-foot shot from Rachel Keeley. Yvette Franco recorded the helper.
Freshman Jasmine Hart scored the game-winning goal for the Longhorns at the 39:31 mark. Hart pushed the ball past Baldwin off Meyer's second assist of the evening.
The Longhorns had two more chances to score later in the opening frame, but a Campbell shot missed wide left and Hart's attempt was stopped by Baldwin.
During the second stanza, UT wasted little time adding to its lead. The Longhorns scored in the 47th minute, when Lachappelle corralled a bouncing ball from Shimmick at 46:33 and rifled it off Baldwin and into the back of the net.
Texas made it a three-goal edge in the 53rd minute when Shimmick served in a corner kick at 52:19 and found Meyer's head for the goal.
Lachappelle struck for her second goal at 61:45 off a pass from freshman Marchelle Davis. Lachappelle dribbled free of defenders and curled a left-footed shot into the back of the net for a 5-1 Texas advantage.
UT's final goal came at 81:12, when Saucedo hammered a pass from freshman Katie Gernsbacher into the back of the net. The Texas defense held the Islanders without a shot in the second half.
The Longhorns open the regular season next Friday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. CT against Georgia. The match will be televised live on Longhorn Network.
