Lindsey Meyer records a goal and an assist; Abby Smith registers eighth career shutout.

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Soccer team opened up the 2013 regular season with a 2-0 victory over Georgia on Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

The Longhorns entered the scoring column in the fifth minute with junior defender Brooke Gilbert scoring UT's first goal of the season. Following a Georgia foul, junior Sharis Lachappelle took a free kick from left of the box and found the head of sophomore Lindsey Meyer. Meyer then directed the ball toward the net where Gilbert finished it off for her third career goal.

Meyer's goal came in the 64th minute and was set up by a Kelsey Shimmick corner kick. Meyer's header to the goal was blocked by Georgia goalkeeper Caitlin Woody, but the ball bounced right back to Meyer who sent a left-footed shot into the net from inside the box.

Texas posted a 17-7 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 margin in shots on goal. Sophomore Abby Smith posted her eighth career shutout in goal for Texas, playing all 90 minutes for the Longhorns.

UT returns to the pitch Sunday for a home match against South Florida. First kick is set for Noon at Myers Stadium, and the match will be broadcast live on Longhorn Network.

POSTGAME NOTES
-Texas is now 2-0 in season openers in the Angela Kelly era.
-Brooke Gilbert's goal in the fifth minute was the third of her career. All three of her career scores have been game-winning goals.
-Lindsey Meyer scored her fifth career goal in the 64th minute. Meyer recorded her second career assist on Gilbert's first-half goal.
-Sharis Lachappelle posted her second career assist on Gilbert's first-half goal.
-Four Longhorn freshmen made their collegiate debuts during Friday's victory and combined to play a total of 216 minutes. Isabelle Kerr (90 minutes), Jasmine Hart (61), Marchelle Davis (39) and Julia Dyche (26) all saw action for the first time in a Texas uniform.
