Freshmen lead the Longhorns to their first win of the season as Pilar Victoria contributed a match-high 14 kills and Chloe Collins added 33 assists.
HONOLULU -- Freshman outside hitter Pilar Victoria led No. 1 Texas Volleyball to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-21) win over instate foe UTEP Saturday morning at the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational. Victoria notched a match-high 14 kills in the Longhorns' first win of the season, while junior Haley Eckerman and senior Bailey Webster added 11 and eight, respectively.
Freshman Chloe Collins also contributed a match-leading 33 assists in her Texas debut.
With mostly underclassmen on the court in the first game, Texas quickly built a commanding 13-5 lead and never relinquished. The Longhorns tallied four blocks in the game, including two from sophomore middle blocker Sara Hattis, to the Miners' lone team block. Texas stymied UTEP's offense, holding it to a subzero hitting percentage on seven kills and eight errors while hitting 28.6 percent (9-3-21) from the floor.
Tied 6-all in a more evenly matched second set, Texas broke away on a pair of kills by Khat Bell and Victoria followed by a UTEP hitting error. The Longhorns would never lead by more than three points until back-to-back kills by Collins gave Texas a 23-18 advantage before it claimed the 25-19 win on a kill and ace by Victoria.
Down by two early in the final set, Texas put together a quick four-point rally to go up 6-4. The Longhorns used a late 6-2 rally for a 21-15 advantage, and they cruised to their eventual match-winning 25-21 game three victory.
Talia Jones and Xitlali Herrera led UTEP offensively with 10 kills apiece.
Texas concludes its opening weekend Saturday evening with an 11 p.m. Central (6 p.m. local) contest against San Diego. Live stats will be available at HawaiiAthletics.com and a video stream of the telecast can be found at BigWest.org.
