Kelsey Shimmick leads Texas with three shots and Abby Smith records a pair of saves in goal on Sunday in Colorado Springs.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Following a nearly three-hour lightning delay and playing through a driving rain for much of the match, the Texas Soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Colorado College on Sunday afternoon.
Despite creating numerous quality scoring opportunities in both halves in playing conditions that became increasingly more challenging as the game progressed, UT could not find the back of the net. Colorado College got scores in the 59th minute from Jessie Ayers and in the 83rd minute from Kaeli Vandersluis to take the game to its final result.
The first 5 minutes, 46 seconds of the match were played on the grass-surface Stewart Field before lightning in the area forced the weather delay. The remainder of the match was played on the adjacent turf-surface Washburn Field, which was laden with puddling water by the game's conclusion.
When play resumed at the 5:46 mark, Colorado College threatened Texas' defensive back line, but the Longhorns held despite surrendering three early corners. UT began to find its offensive rhythm midway through the opening period. Kelsey Shimmick got a shot off from 30 yards out on the left side in the 26th minute that was saved by Tiger keeper Kate Scheele. UT's best scoring opportunity of the first half came in minute 35 when Sharis Lachappelle made contact in the box but sailed it high. The teams entered the half with no score.
On the other end of halftime and after Ayers' goal in the 59th, Texas got back-to-back shots off from Shimmick and Chantale Campbell, both of which forced saves from Scheele. Shimmick recorded her team-high third shot of the day in the 76th minute, which was blocked, and Lindsey Meyer sent a shot from just outside of the top of the 18-yard box in the 77th. Lachappelle got close again in the 80th minute from the left side of the box before Vandersluis tacked on Colorado College's second score.
The Longhorns finished the match with nine shots, seven of them on goal. Abby Smith made two saves in her complete game in goal for UT.
Texas (4-3-1) returns to Austin to close out its non-conference season with a pair of matches next weekend. On Friday, the Longhorns will face Texas State at Mike A. Myers Stadium at 7 p.m. Central. Sunday, UT will match up against UTSA at 7 p.m. Both games will be televised live by Longhorn Network.
