Longhorns place four in top nine of men’s pole vault on opening day of two-day meet
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – All-American Reese Watson and Hayden Clark each cleared 17 feet, 3/4 inch in the pole vault highlighting the performance of the Track and Field team Friday evening on the opening-day of the Cherry and Silver Collegiate Invitational.
Watson finished fifth based on fewer misses, while Clark was sixth as the Longhorns placed four among the top nine in the event.
Texas sent just 32 athletes, including 14 first-year performers, to the two-day, non-scored meet, which features athletes from 31 teams competing at the Albuquerque Convention Center, site of the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 14-15.
Blake Jakobsson claimed another top-10 finish for the Longhorns, placing seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 58-8 1/2 (17.89m). Clint Harris was 10th with a mark of 55-11 3/4 (17.06m).
Freshman Derrell Manhertz was fifth in the 600 meters in a time of 1 minute, 20.56 seconds.
Melissa Gonzalez also finished in the top 10 on the women's side of the 600 meters. Her time of 1:36.89 was good for 10th place.
Mark Thomas and Noah Zorsky finished seventh and ninth, respectively, in the pole vault, with each clearing 16-6 3/4 (5.05m).
All-Americans Danielle Dowie and Kaitlin Petrillose will be in action for the top-ranked UT women's team on Saturday.
Dowie, an All-American in the 400-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay, will compete in the 400 and 4x400m relay. Petrillose will try and repeat her pole vault performance of last week when she won the event at the Arkansas dual meet with a clearance of 13-11 1/4 inches (4.25m), the second-best indoor mark in UT history.
Sophomore Ryan Crouser will make his season debut for the 15th-ranked men's squad on Saturday. He is the preseason favorite to claim the NCAA indoor shot put title after winning the 2013 NCAA outdoor crown in June.
Saturday's events begin at 11 a.m. Central
