Longhorns out-shot the Cyclones in the match by a 24-6 total.

AMES, Iowa -- With a match-time temperature of 45 degrees, occasional wind gusts topping 30 mph and wind chills hovering in the low 30's on Friday at the Cyclone Sports Complex, Texas fought past both the elements and Iowa State in securing an important Big 12 Conference victory, 1-0.

The Longhorns out-shot Iowa State by a 24-6 total, including a commanding 13-2 over the second 45 minutes of action, and 8-3 on shots on goal. Texas, which entered tonight's match ranked second in NCAA Division I in earning corner kicks, managed a 13-1 advantage over ISU in the category.

The winning goal was scored at 69:06 by Texas junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer, her second goal of the campaign, off assists from senior defender Brooke Gilbert and junior forward Chantale Campbell.

"Excited for our squad as we had a very strong team performance tonight," Texas head coach Angela Kelly said. "Loved our speed of play and the quality of our touches. This team is continuing to get better and better."

Texas wasted no time creating a solid offensive opportunity by earning a corner in the opening 45 seconds of the contest. After UT's Julia Dyche took a short corner, the ball was eventually crossed into the middle where senior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle was lurking. The San Antonio, Texas, native's header proved too strong, however, rising over the crossbar and venturing out of play.

The Cyclones came right back down the pitch to create a scoring chance of their own at 3:04. A shot from Alyssa Williamson from approximately 14 yards out in the middle of the 18 drifted high of frame.

UT just missed a glorious chance during the 16th minute as Lachappelle made a quick run up the left wing and crossed to the far post. Brook was making a run up the middle, and while unmarked, came up about a foot short of reaching the pass and having a point-blank opportunity to score the match's first goal. The ball eventually rolled out over the right sideline for a throw-in.

Iowa State missed a golden opportunity of its own in the 25th minute as a pass ended up at the feet of Hayley Womack in the middle of the 18. In some space 14 yards out, her right-footed shot cut too far to the right and past the post for a harmless goal kick.

With 3:38 remaining in the first stanza, Texas sophomore forward Jasmine Hart launched a drive from the middle of the 18. The promising shot had to be tipped over the crossbar by leaping Iowa State keeper Andrea Swanson as the teams eventually went to the break at 0-0.

Another dangerous sequence saw Texas get close to breaking in front in the 54th minute as junior forward Kelsey Shimmick dribbled to her left, inside of a defender on the right side, and launched a right-footed shot on frame. The wind-altered drive was blocked, ricocheting out in the middle of the six-yard box. A Cyclone defender attempted to clear the ball over the top of goal, but her clearance attempt struck hard off the crossbar, bouncing back into play. UT couldn't manage a follow-up shot, however, as Iowa State finally managed to move the ball up-field out of danger.

The breakthrough finally came at 69:06 as Texas started the decisive play by earning one of its trademark corners. Campbell delivered a perfect ball from the right corner to the far post where Gilbert headed the ball back across the face. The ball briefly connected with Meyer's leg, diverting the sphere into the twine for a 1-0 lead.

The Longhorns continued to pressure down the stretch searching for an insurance score. Senior defender Whitney Jaynes and Lachappelle forced saves at 74:18 and 78:01, respectively.

One nervy moment remained for the Horns in the 87th minute as Iowa State earned its only corner kick of the match. Womack served the ball in from the left corner to the near post, but a Cyclone header into the middle was quickly cleared away by Texas to seal the 1-0 victory.

Texas returns home to Mike A. Myers Stadium for its next match-up, hosting league foe No. 16 Kansas on Fri., Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. CT. The contest will be broadcast live on Longhorn Network.
