HOUSTON -- Arkansas used a strong rushing attack and a stifling defense to defeat the Texas football team 31-7 Monday night in the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl.
The Razorbacks (7-6), who rushed 50 times on their 73 offensive plays, possessed the ball for more than 41 minutes as Texas (6-7) struggled to establish its offense.
Coming into the game as the only school in the nation with a pair of 1,000 yard rushers, Arkansas rode the legs of Jonathan Williams (23 rushes, 105 yards, 1 TD) and Alex Collins (17 rushes, 76 yards). Quarterback Brandon Allen went 12-of-23 for 160 yards including touchdown strikes of 36 and 5 yards.
After allowing its last five opponents an average of just 11 points per game, the Arkansas defense was just as stingy against Texas, holding the Longhorns to 59 yards of total offense.
Texas quarterback Tyrone Swoopes finished the game 13-of-25 for 57 yards. Malcolm Brown finished as the leading rusher with 25 yards.
The Razorbacks built a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter after a 32-yard field goal and a six-play, 87-yard drive capped off by a 36-yard touchdown pass from Allen to Demetrius Wilson.
After the Texas defense forced a punt midway through the second quarter, the offense took over on its own 3. On the first play of the drive, Swoopes and Johnathan Gray botched the exchange on a handoff, and Arkansas recovered in the end zone for a 17-0 lead.
Setup with good field position after a long kickoff return by Jacorey Warrick, the Longhorns got on the board with 3:59 left in the first half. Swoopes accounted for 40 of 44 yards on the drive, connecting on 4 of 4 passes for 31 yards, then finishing the drive with a 9-yard TD run that cut the deficit to 17-7.
Texas, though, couldn't keep the momentum, as Arkansas responded with a touchdown on the ensuing drive when Allen hit Keon Hatcher for a 5-yard score.
The teams slugged through a scoreless third quarter, and Arkansas scored the game's final points on a 1-yard TD run by Williams with 11:41 remaining in the fourth.
