With squads competing Saturday at both the Razorback Invitational and the Bill Bergan Invitational, the men's and women's Track and Field team posted a number of impressive performances, including six victories.
The second-ranked women were entered in four events at the Bill Bergan Invite in Ames, Iowa, and won each one of them. That meet began Thursday at the Lied Recreation Center, though the Longhorns were only in action Saturday. That facility will hold the Big 12 Indoor Championships in four weeks.
"We had some really good performances across the board at Iowa State," head coach Mario Sategna said. "It was important for us to get in that setting where we will be for the conference meet."
Morolake Akinson captured the 60 meters in a personal-best tying 7.28 seconds and was second in the 200 (23.72) just behind Ashley Spencer who won in 23.46, the fourth-best time on the 2014 national performers list.
Freshman Kendall Baisden had her best day as a Longhorn, winning the 400 in 53.27, which is tied for No. 4 on this year's national list. She was the only Texas competitor in the 25-woman field.
"That was a great time by Kendall," Sategna said.
Junior Morgan Snow won the 60-meter hurdles by matching her season best with a time 8.38.
Zack Bilderback has picked up in 2014 where he left off last season, which ended with an appearance in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The sophomore won the 400 meters in Ames by clocking a personal-best 46.98, the 24th-best mark in the nation. That time moves him from 10th to fifth on the UT all-time performers list.
Competing nearly 500 miles away in Fayetteville, Ark., Sara Sutherland had a career performance in the 3,000 meters. The senior won the event in a 9 minutes, 10.54 seconds, nearly 18 seconds ahead of teammate Marielle Hall who finished second. Sutherland's time is third best in school history and No. 5 on the 2014 national performers list.
"Sara knocked it out of the park," Sategna said. "She was by herself the whole way."
Freshman Wolf Mahler, competing in his first career multi-event, rallied on the final day of the heptathlon at the Arkansas Invite. He moved from sixth to second by finishing second in each of the three events Saturday. His most impressive mark came in the pole vault where he cleared 15 feet, 11 inches (4.85m) to finish behind defending national champion Kevin Lazas in that event as well as overall. Lazas posted the best total in the nation (5,923). Mahler's final total of 5,335 is 12th on the 2014 national list.
"That was a nice score for Wolf to put up his first time out," Sategna said.
Redshirt Freshman Chris Irvin, who was also participating in his first multi-event, was fifth in the heptathlon with 4,672 points.
Both of the meets were scored, though with only six women and 11 men traveling to Ames, Iowa, the Longhorns were not going to threaten for the team title. The women still managed to rack up 68 points competing in just four events, which placed them fourth in the 10-team field. Kansas State won with 145.
The UT men posted 43 points to finish seventh among nine teams at Iowa State. Minnesota won with 153.
Arkansas, the home team, had the high point total for both the men (153.50) and women (151) at the Razorback Invitational. The Texas women were seventh with 38 points, while the men ended up eighth with 25. Most of the nine teams did not send full squads.
The Longhorns will return to Albuquerque, N.M., next weekend for the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
