Junior Bertine Strauss fired the Longhorns’ lowest individual round of the season with a 3-under-par 69 in the final round.
NEW ORLEANS -- Texas Women's Golf junior Bertine Strauss fired a 3-under-par 69 in Tuesday's final round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate to charge 20 places up the individual leaderboard and finish in a team- and season-best tie for 17th place at even-par 216 (75-72-69). As a team, the Longhorns (301-300-293=894, +30) also turned in their best team performance of the tournament on Tuesday and finished tied for 15th overall in the second event of the spring season.
Beginning on the 16th hole in the shotgun start, Strauss played the final three holes of English Turn Golf & Country Club par-bogey-par before making the turn. Following another par, she collected three birdies over the next four holes to dip to -2 through eight. A bogey on the ninth hole cost her a stroke, but she gained it back along with another with a pair of birdies on Nos. 12 and 14 – her 15th and 17th holes of the day – and signed for Texas' lowest individual round of the season.
Freshman Julia Beck (75-77-72=224) closed with an even-par 72 and finished tied for 58th at +8. Freshmen Lara Weinstein (76-75-77=228) and Anne Hakula (76-78-76=229) tied for 74th and 77th places, respectively, while sophomore Natalie Karcher (80-76-76=232) rounded out the Texas contingent in 82nd.
UCLA (285-277-281=843) bested runner-up Southern California (285-281-283=849) by six strokes for the team title. Auburn's Marta Sanz (71-69-68=208) earned medalist honors by a one-stroke margin over Denver's Tonje Daffinrud (70-67-72=209).
The Longhorns return to action next month at The Farms Collegiate Invite scheduled for March 23-25 in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
