AMES, Iowa – Kaitlin Petrillose defended her pole vault title in record-setting fashion and the men and women's Track and Field team sent a number of athletes from prelims to running finals during Friday's action at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
Just five of the men's and six of the women's 19 events were completed on the first of the two-day meet at Iowa State's Lied Recreation Center.
The fifth-ranked Texas women ended the day tied for first with Kansas State, each tallying 38 points. Iowa State is third with 29 points.
After senior Shanay Briscoe opened the scoring with eight points by finishing second in the pentathlon with a career-best 4,043 points, Petrillose won her league record third-straight women's pole vault title by clearing a meet-record 14 feet, 5 1/4 inches (4.40m). She also tied the facility mark. Once the victory was in hand, the sophomore went after the collegiate record of 14-11 (4.55m) held by Tina Sutej of Arkansas. Petillose had the bar set at 14-11 1/2 (4.56m), but missed all three tries, though just barely grazed the bar on the second attempt.
The women's team advanced a combined 13 from the prelims to Saturday's finals in the 60, 200 and 400 meters, and 60-meter hurdles. All six of the women's entries in the 200m reached the final and four did in the 400. Only eight advance in each of the running finals.
For the men, sophomore Zack Bilderback reached the final of both the 200 and 400 meters, while freshman Senoj-Jay Givans advanced to the final of the 60 and 200.
The women had the top preliminary time in the 60 meters (Morolake Akinosun – 7.32), 200 meters (Ashley Spencer – 23.52), 400 meters (Kendall Baisden, 52.71 - PR) and mile (Marielle Hall – 4:42.60).
"It's never going to go perfect, but we feel like we are in a great spot on the women's side," head coach Mario Sategna said.
Akinosun (23.70) and Baisden (23.58) also reached the finals of the 200, while Spencer (53.26) reached in the 400, her signature event.
The women also pick up 10 points in 5,000 meters. Olivia Mickle was second in 16:21.29 and Megan Siebert was seventh (16:50.44). Texas also had sixth-place finishes from Melissa Gonzalez, with a career-best total of 3,757 in the pentathlon, and freshman Alyssa Gullo, who posted a personal-best clearance of 12-5 1/2 (3.80m) in the pole vault.
"On the men's side we didn't capitalize as much as could have in weight throw and pole vault," Sategna said. "But tomorrow we have a guy in 60, a couple in the 200 and 400. It's going to be a dogfight, but that's what the conference meet is all about."
The 17th-ranked UT men, the defending league champions, sit in fifth place with 22 points. Oklahoma State leads the pack with 39 points.
Blake Jakobsson put the men on the board first by finishing fourth (five points) in the weight throw with a personal-best toss of 59-11 1/4 (18.27m).
Mark Thomas and Reese Watson accounted for five points in the pole vault after finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. They both cleared 17- 3/4 (5.20m), but were knocked out when the bar reached 17-6 1/2 (4.35m).
Sophomore Johannes Hock, who is not competing in the heptathlon due to injury, was seventh in the long jump with a mark of 23-11 3/4 (7.31m). Hock set a Big 12 meet record in winning last year's heptathlon title.
With Hock out of the heptathlon, freshman Wolf Mahler put himself in scoring position in the two-day event. He posted the top time in the 60 meters (7.06) and is in fifth place with a total of 2,776 after four events. The final three are the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters.
The men do have four entries in Saturday's shot put headlined by the Ryan Crouser, the national leader in the event.
The Big 12 meet concludes Saturday with the heptathlon starting the action at 11 a.m. Central.
Longhorn Notes
• Kaitlin Petrillose became the first Big 12 women's pole vaulter to claim three straight titles. Petrillose, who ranks second on the 2014 NCAA performers list with a school-record clearance of 14-7.25 (4.45m), became the eighth performer to sweep the Big 12 indoor and outdoor titles last season (also Candy Mason, Kansas - 1998; Andrea Branson, Kansas - 1999; Erin Anderson, K-State - 2000; Jenny Green, Nebraska - 2004; Kate Sultanova, Kansas - 2008; Shade Weygandt, Texas Tech; Natalie Willer, Nebraska - 2011), though none were able to win a third. Texas became the second school to claim four straight women's pole vault titles. Natasha Masterson won for the 2012 outdoor title for Texas. Kansas captured the first four pole vault titles in 1998-99.
• Freshman Kendall Baisden competed in her first 200-meter race of the season Friday and was impressive. She was one of six Longhorns to advance to Saturday's final and her time of 23.58 ranks No. 20 on the 2014 national performers list. Baisden also posted a personal-best 52.71 in the 400m prelims. That moves her from No. 19 to tied for seventh on the 2014 NCAA performers list.
• A two-time All-Big 12 choice in cross country, senior Megan Siebert earned all-league honors indoor or outdoors for the first time with a seventh-place finish in the 5,000 meters. She clocked a time of 16:50.44, which was just off her personal-best of 16:50.40 (2013 Big 12 Indoor meet).
• Marielle Hall seems to like the track at the Lied Recreation Center. Two weeks ago at the Iowa State Classic, the senior posted a time of 4:41.19 which ranks No. 2 on the UT all-time performance list. During Friday's mile prelims, Hall posted the fourth-best time in school history by clocking a time of 4:42.60. It was also the top time in the prelim. Liz Diaz is the only other Longhorn to run a faster indoor mile time than Hall. Diaz posted a school record time of 4:40.12 in winning the 2000 Big 12 indoor title at the same venue. She is the only Longhorn to win a Big 12 indoor mile crown.
• Shanay Briscoe had her best-ever performance in the pentathlon, posting a total of 4,043. Her previous best of 4,039 came at the 2013 NCAA Indoor meet, where she finished 12th. Briscoe, who capped off Friday's pentathlon with a career-best time of 2:24.52 in the 800 meters, was fourth in the event at last year's Big 12 Indoor meet. That was her first-ever pentathlon.
