ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A victory by All-American Shanay Briscoe in the high jump and a career-best pole vault by All-American Reese Watson highlighted the performance Friday evening of the Texas track and field team during opening-day action at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
Briscoe cleared 5 feet, 10 inches to claim first in the 16-woman field, her third victory this season in as many starts in the high jump.
Watson finished third, including second among collegians, with an indoor personal-best clearance of 17-9 3/4 (5.43m). He moved from a 16th-place tie to seventh on the 2014 national performers list. The sophomore missed just one attempt at his first three heights, but then was unable to clear the eventual winning height of 18 1/2 (5.50m).
The Longhorns sent 40 men and women to the two-day, non-scored meet at the Albuquerque Convention Center, site of next month's NCAA Indoor Championships, though only 23 were in action Friday.
The travel party was scheduled to arrive in Albuquerque, N.M., Thursday evening, but ended up being delayed due to flight cancellations and did not land in town until Friday morning.
"I thought the team did a nice job of not letting the travel delay faze them," head coach Mario Sategna said. "Everyone managed the day and handled their business."
Seniors Mark Thomas and Hayden Clark each cleared 17 3/4 (5.20m) in the pole vault and freshman Logan Brittain finished fourth in the high jump with an indoor collegiate-best 6-11 3/4 (2.13m). Brittain was also eighth in the long jump with a leap of 23-6 1/4 (7.17m).
Defending NCAA decathlon champion Johannes Hock made his season debut. The sophomore was fourth in the long jump with a mark of 24-1 3/4 (7.36m). He will compete in the 60-meter hurdles Saturday.
The second-ranked women's team had only six in action Friday, but four of them competed in the 200 meters.
Senior All-American Christy Udoh was second in the 200 with a season-best time of 23.97 seconds. Danielle Dowie was just behind her in third (23.99).
The 18th-ranked Longhorn men also had a 3-4-5 finish in the weight throw. Blake Jakobsson went 58-4 (17.78m), Clint Harris 57-5 1/2 (17.51m) and Will Spence 57-3 (17.45m).
Saturday's action begins at 11:30 a.m. Central.
