UT sophomore goalkeeper records five saves to lead Americans to win in first match at the Six Nations Tournament.
LA MANGA, Spain — University of Texas sophomore goalkeeper Abby Smith recorded five saves while leading the United States Under-23 Women's National Team to a 1-0 victory against Japan in the opening match at the Six Nations Tournament on Saturday at the La Manga Football Centre. Smith played all 90 minutes in goal for the Americans.
Kealia Ohai scored the lone goal of the match in the 56th minute. Katie Stengel dribbled to the right side of the six-yard box, drawing the Japanese goalkeeper out, before squaring to Ohai who scored into the empty net.
Smith and Team USA will continue the competition with matches against the Under-23 teams of Sweden on Monday, March 3 and Norway on Wednesday, March 5.
