Longhorns gear up for Texas Relays by opening outdoor season at UTSA Texas Challenge Invitational
SAN ANTONIO – The Texas track and field team warmed up for next week's Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays by sending a contingent of men and women to the UTSA Texas Challenge Invitational on Saturday.
With all of the qualifiers for last weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships remaining in Austin, the six-team meet was an opportunity for other members of the Longhorn roster to get some seasoning in the first outdoor meet of the year and the inaugural competition at the Park West Athletics Complex on UT-San Antonio's campus.
"That was just what we needed," head coach Mario Sategna said. "We had a chance to take most of the team which was not at nationals. It was important to compete outdoors before next week's Relays, where the expectations pick up."
Junior Will Spence had a solid season opener in both of his events. He was second in the shot put with a toss of 61 feet, 3/4 inch (18.61m). Richard Garrett of UTSA won with a national-leading mark of 64-3 1/4 (19.59m). Spence was also fourth in the discus, with his mark of 182-2 (55.52m), just a few inches off his personal best.
The Longhorns were strong in the 800 meters. In his first competition since finishing second in the 800 at the Big 12 Indoor Championships, freshman Robert Uhr won the event in 1 minute, 51.87 seconds. David Anamosa was fourth in 1:52.85. On the women's side, senior Katie Hoaldridge, making her season debut, was second in the 800, clocking a time of 2:09.40.
Sategna liked what he saw from veterans Morgan Snow and Josh Brudnick, as well as sophomore Melissa Gonzalez.
Snow, a junior, was second in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 13.36. Brudnick, a senior, was fourth (52.56) in the 400-meter hurdles and Gonzalez was second (1:00.42)
Freshman Nia Dorner won the won the 400 in 54.90.
With the UT men and women not fielding complete teams, neither was in the hunt for the team titles. The men had 84 points to place fourth. Texas A&M led the way in the men's standings with 197.50 points. The Texas women were fifth with 73.50 points. Texas Tech was first on that side with 197.50.
The two-day meet began Friday with multi-events, though the Longhorns did not have entries in either. Houston and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rounded out the field.
The Longhorns are back in action beginning Wednesday when the four-day Texas Relays gets underway at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
