The 2014 Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays continued Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium. In the second of the four-day event, current and former Texas Longhorns shined in the multi-events and distance races.
Defending NCAA champion Johannes Hock of Texas finished third in the decathlon with 7,573 points. This is Hock's first multi-event of the year due to an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery last summer. Hock's highest points in the final five events came in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.57 seconds (902) and discus throw with a toss of 165 feet (50.30m), that earned him 877. Hock's finish puts him in good shape to qualify for the NCAA meet in June, with the top 24 scores earning an automatic berth. Last season, 7,406 was the lowest qualifying point total.
Hock has not yet been cleared to throw the javelin so the natural right-hander was forced to use his left hand. The sophomore, who normally throws more than 200 feet, was only able to reach 117-5 (35.79m), the final of his three attempts. That earned him only 381 points, around 400 below his normal output in that event.
"All that matters is that [score] will get me into nationals. I am 98 percent sure," Hock said. "That score is in a range where I usually don't even think about, but I knew from the start it was going to get rough. It ended up getting harder than we thought, but there were a lot of things coming together."
Senior Chase Dalton from Brigham Young University finished first with a national-leading 7,642 points, aided by strong performances in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.10 seconds (837) and the javelin with a distance of 210-6 (64.17m) which netted him 801 points. Senior Kevin Lazas from Arkansas took second place, finishing with 7,592 points.
Longhorn legend and Olympian Leo Manzano won the 800-meter invitational with a time of 1:47.34, setting both Texas Relays and Myers Stadium records. Manzano held both previous marks after running the 800 meters in 1:47.65 at the 2012 Texas Relays.
"I was really excited to come back here," Manzano said. "Of course, you are always a little nervous because you never know how the race is going to unfold, and it is the first one of the season as well. So, I was really excited to come out and perform today. I give special thanks to [Texas coach] Mario Sategna and The University of Texas for all of their support.
Decathlete Trey Hardee, another former Texas Olympian, placed eighth in the pole vault section B after recording a 17-0¾ mark (5.20m). Hardee, who set the collegiate decathlon record at the 2006 Texas Relays, is competing in three events this weekend. He will compete in the discus Friday and 100 meters on Saturday.
This wasn't the normal pressure-packed stage Hardee is accustomed to at the international level.
"[I just wanted to] have fun, be healthy, and enjoy the Relays for what it is," Hardee said. "I'll just try to use the crowd and get some adrenaline and have a good time; just work on some things in this environment. This is almost a championship environment when you get down to it- with all of the fans, the energy and the adrenaline you get lining up."
Both the Texas men's and women's teams won their respective 5,000-meter races. Junior Mark Pinales recorded a personal-best 14:25.96 while senior Olivia Mickle won in 16:35.43.
The Longhorns finished second in the women's 4x800-meter relay. Senior Marielle Hall, junior Connor Ward, freshman Mary Beth Hamilton and senior Katie Hoaldridge clocked a time of 8:47.79. Baylor took first with a time of 8:46.85.
Senior Danielle Dowie had the second best prelim time (58.76) in the 400-meter hurdles. Senior Nikita Tracey from LSU had the top time of 58.18. Finals are set for Friday afternoon.
The action will continue on Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium at 9:30 a.m. Central with prelims of running events, as well as field events.
