Davis throws third-straight complete game; Stephens blasts eighth home run.
FULLERTON, Calif. – Freshman LHP Tiarra Davis threw her sixth complete game and sophomore Lindsey Stephens crushed her eighth home run of the season to lift Texas Softball to a 5-1 win over Houston on the first day of the Judy Garman Classic. The Longhorns extended their season-longest win streak to six games to improve to 14-9 on the year, while their in-state rivals fell to 10-8 this season.
UT got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on sophomore Stephanie Ceo's two-out RBI single that scored freshman Stephanie Wong from third base. Wong, who came in as Texas's leading hitter with a .450 clip, got the frame started with a leadoff walk before senior Mandy Ogle grounded into a fielder's choice to set up runners on the corners for Ceo.
The Cougars had their chance to match Texas' output when they returned to the plate in the third inning. Leading off, Selena Hernandez was hit by a pitch and then moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. With two outs in the inning, Haley Outon got the first hit off of Davis when she ripped one into right field. Stephens quickly played the ball and threw a bullet to Ogle at home to get Hernandez attempting to knot the ballgame at one.
After hurling the ball home to keep UT ahead, Stephens continued her hot streak at the plate when she blasted a two-run home run following senior Brejae Washington's leadoff double.
Texas would add a pair of insurance runs in the home half of the sixth inning to boost its lead to 5-0, heading into the final frame.
UH got its only run off Davis in its last chance at the dish in the seventh on back-to-back hits by Outon and Chamberlain. Davis finished her night with four strikeouts, while giving up as many hits and issuing three walks to improve to 4-5 on the season.
