PHILADELPHIA – The men and women's Track and Field team started its three-day stay at the Penn Relays in impressive fashion Thursday, advancing two relays to finals, capturing a title and nearly setting a school record at historic Franklin Field.
The foursome of Briana Nelson, Courtney Okolo, Kendall Baisden and Ashley Spencer clocked the top time (3 minutes, 31.93 seconds) in the 4x400-meter relay prelim, well ahead of Oregon, which was second in 3:34.49. The final is set for Saturday.
That same quartet for the third-ranked UT women posted this season's nation-leading time of 3:26.38 at last month's Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
Okolo (second leg) and Spencer (anchor) were also on the 4x100m relay that clocked a time 44.68, which was third in the prelim and sends the unit to Friday's final. Morgan Snow, who ran the opening leg, and Morolake Akinosun rounded out the foursome.
Brittany Marches continued her strong senior season. She finished sixth in the championship section of the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:28.86, which is the second-best performance in school history and less than two seconds off her UT record (10:26.90).
Chris Galvin was one of just four competitors in action for the 15th-ranked UT men and he didn't disappoint, claiming the title in the championship section of the 10,000 meters, the final college event of the day, in a field of 40 competitors. The winning time for the senior transfer from Navy was 29:35.52, just more than one second off his career best (29:34.31).
Senior Danielle Dowie was the first UT competitor in action Thursday. She finished third in the early morning championship section of the 400-meter hurdles in 57.93, her second-best time of the season.
Dowie also ran the second leg of the championship section of the distance medley relay. Connor Ward, Dowie, Katie Hoaldridge and Marielle Hall posted a time of 11:16.76, a mark that ranks fifth on the all-time UT performance chart.
Mark Pinales had a strong performance in the championship section of the 5,000 meters. He clocked a personal-best time of 14:04.98 to finish sixth. Craig Lutz was also entered in that race, but was unable to finish. Austin Roth was 10th in the steeplechase in 9:06.41.
Senior Olivia Mickle was third in the championship section of the 5,000 meters in personal-best time of 16:18.91. Alaina Perez had a career-best time of 10:59.66 in the championship section of the steeplechase. Mickle moved from 11th to 10th on the UT all-time performers list. Perez's time is 14th on the school's all-time performance list and she is now fifth among performers.
The Longhorns are back in action at 11:30 a.m. Friday. The 104th edition of the prestigious meet concludes Saturday.
Longhorn Notes
• Brittany Marches snapped her own school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase three weeks ago at the Stanford Invitational when she clocked a time of 10:26.90. With Thursday's performance (10:28.86), the senior has now posted the top nine steeplechase times in school history. Marches eclipsed Dawn Domashk's record of 10:53.18 (set on May 19, 2003) at the 2012 Mt. SAC Relays and went on to break that mark four times.
• Danielle Dowie's time of 57.93 in the 400-meter hurdles was not far off her season-best mark of 57.52 posted at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. That time ranks No. 9 on the 2014 NCAA performers list.
