Track and Field keeps rolling during Friday’s action at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA – One day after the third-ranked women's Track and Field team advanced from the prelim to final in both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays, the No. 15 men duplicated those performances during Friday's action at the Penn Relays.
The Longhorn men clocked season best times in each event at historic Franklin Field. The foursome of Charles Anumnu, Zack Bilderback, Senoj-Jay Givans and Chris Irvin crossed the tape in 40.00 seconds to finish third among the 92 entries in the 4x100m relay prelim. UTech of Kingston, Jamaica, blazed home in a prelim-best 39.19.
Texas utilized nearly the same group to advance to Saturday's 4x400m relay final. Irvin, Andrew Whyte, Givans and Bilderback clocked a time of 3:05.86, which was third in the field of 89. It was also the Longhorns' best time since the 2008 NCAA Championships.
Bilderback had the most impressive leg in helping the Longhorns win the second heat, taking the baton home in 44.5 seconds.
In the women's 4x100m relay final, the foursome of Morgan Snow, Courtney Okolo, Morolake Akinosun and Ashley Spencer finished fourth by clocking a time of 43.95. That was shy of their season-best (and No. 5 on the 2014 NCAA performers list) 43.62 posted at last week's Michael Johnson Dr Pepper Classic in Baylor.
Snow impressed in the prelim of the 100-meter hurdles, finishing second in the 30-woman field with a time of 13.15, her second-best legal-wind time of the season.
The women also advanced to Saturday's final of the 4x200-meter relay. Akinosun, Christy Udoh, Briana Nelson and Danielle Dowie clocked the second-best time (1:33.43) in Friday's prelim.
The women's 4x400-meter relay final is also set for Saturday. The foursome of Nelson, Courtney Okolo, Kendall Baisden and Spencer clocked the top time (3:31.93 seconds) in Thursday's prelim. That same group posted this season's nation-leading time of 3:26.38 at last month's Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. The UT women last appeared at the Penn Relays in 2011 and won the 4x400-meter relay title at that event.
"We had another solid day," head coach Mario Sategna said. "This meet is about beating people and making finals. This is a good experience for us before the conference and national meets."
The men and women also competed in the sprint medley relay Thursday.
The women's quartet of Udoh, Baisden, Dowie and Katie Hoaldridge was fifth in a time of 3:49.76, the 10th-best mark in UT history. The men's foursome f Charles Anumnu, Carlton Anumnu, Pieter Conradie and John McNamara was 11th in the prelim (3:24.89) and did not advance to Saturday's final.
The annual meet, in its 120th season, concludes Saturday when 15 Longhorns will be in action, including nine men and six women.
Longhorn Notes
• The foursome of freshmen Chris Irvin, Andrew Whyte and Senoj-Jay Givans, and sophomore Zack Bilderback not only posted the best 4x400-meter relay time (3:05.86) of the season for the Longhorns, but it was the top time since the 2008 NCAA Championships. The quartet of Tevas Everett, Tevan Everett, Jacob Hernandez and Danzell Fortson posted a time of 3:05.09 in the prelim at that meet and went on to clock a 3:05.27 in the finals to finish seventh.
• The UT women won the 4x400-meter relay in their last appearance (2011) at the Penn Relays. The foursome of Angele Cooper, Briana Nelson, Kendra Chambers and Chantel Malone clocked a time of 3:30.08 in the final.
