STANFORD, Calif. – Marielle Hall continues to prove she is not only one of the top distance runners in University of Texas track and field history, but also in the nation.
After sweeping the mile and 3,000-meter titles at last month's Big 12 Indoor Championships, Hall smashed the school record in the 5,000 meters Friday night at the Stanford Invitational, clocking a time of 15 minutes, 19.26 seconds to outdistance the Section 1 field of 26 which included 14 professional athletes.
In addition to eclipsing the UT record of 15:46.00 set by Annie Schweitzer in 1987 by nearly 30 seconds, Hall also posted one of the best times in collegiate history. Her time ranks No. 10 on the all-time collegiate 5,000-meter performance list. Over the last five years only three women have clocked a better time during a collegiate meet. One of them, Abbey D'Agostino of Dartmouth, is the two-time defending NCAA 5,000m champion.
But Hall, a Haddonfield, N.J., native who clocked a then nation-leading 1,500-meter time of 4:17.10 during last weekend's Texas Relays, wasn't the only Longhorn senior to have an impressive performance at the two-day distance-heavy Stanford meet, which began Friday at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Brittany Marches snapped her own UT record in the steeplechase by clocking a time of 10:26.90 in the Section 2 field. Marches held the mark since posting a 10:30.77 at the 2013 NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin.
Olivia Mickle, a senior transfer from Brown, clocked a time of 33:40.14 in Section 1 of the 10,000 meters, nearly setting a third school mark. Mickle's time was the second-best in school history. Sandy Blakeslee ran a UT-record 33:30.73 at the 1987 U.S. Outdoor Championships.
In other action Friday, sophomore Katie Burford had a personal-best 4:34.79 in the 1,500 meters and junior Connor Ward clocked a career-best 16:55.06 in the 5,000. Redshirt freshman Nate Moore clocked a personal-record 8:57.20 in steeplechase and Mark Pinales had a career-best 29:23.26 in the 10,000 meters, an event which didn't end until near midnight on the West Coast.
On Saturday afternoon, the Longhorns, ranked No. 3 nationally on the women's side and 18th on the men's, got strong performances from their two athletes in action.
Senior Katie Hoaldridge clocked a time of 2:07.13 in the 800 meters, just off her personal best of 2:06.81. She was eighth overall among the 77 entries in the race.
f
Sophomore David Anamosa, the team's final of 15 competitors over the weekend, won his 800-meter section, clocking a personal-best 1:51.13. He was 16th among the 83 entries.
In addition to Hall's impressive time, those posted by Hoaldridge, Mickle, Moore and Pinales are well within the range of those that were on the qualifying list for the 2013 NCAA West Preliminary Round. The top 48 times/marks in the West Region earn automatic berths to the Preliminary Round meet, which is the qualifier for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The Longhorns are back in action next Saturday when they serve as host to the Texas Invitational, the second of their three home meets this season. The one-day meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium will feature men's and women's teams from Houston, Baylor, UTSA, UTA, South Florida, SMU and Stephen F. Austin. Field events begin at 10:30 a.m. Central and running events at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.
