FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Track and Field team had a successful opening day at the NCAA West Preliminary Round at the University of Arkansas.
The Longhorns advanced four field event athletes and one distance runner to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and 10 more from first round running events to quarterfinals during Thursday's action.
Facing humid and occasional rainy conditions at John McDonnell Field, the top-ranked women's team was especially impressive with eight of its nine first-round entries on Thursday heading to quarterfinal action, including all four in the 400 meters.
The top 12 times/marks in each event at the three-day West Prelim earn berths to next month's NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Courtney Okolo (51.94 seconds), Briana Nelson (51.94), Ashley Spencer (52.23) and Kendall Baisden (52.45) each won heats in the 48-woman 400-meter field that was pared down to 24 for Friday's quarterfinal.
Okolo, Baisden, Nelson and Spencer entered the meet seeded one through four, respectively.
Danielle Dowie (57.49) and Melissa Gonzalez (58.58) advanced to the quarterfinal in the 400-meter hurdles, Morolake Akinosun (11.39) in the 100 meters, and Katie Hoaldridge (2:06.82) in the 800. Gonzalez's time was the second best of her career. All three quarterfinals are set for Friday.
As expected a pair of NCAA champions advanced to the national meet.
For the seventh-ranked Longhorn men, junior Ryan Crouser earned a berth to his third-straight NCAA Outdoor meet by posting the top performance in the shot put with a toss of 66 feet, 11 1/4 inches (20.40m) in the first round. Crouser won the shot put at both the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships and the 2014 indoor meet and entered Thursday's action with the No. 1 seed after a national-leading toss of 70-2 1/4 (21.29m) at the Big 12 Outdoor meet.
Kaitlin Petrillose barely broke a sweat in advancing to the national meet. Petrillose, a junior, needed just one attempt in the pole vault, clearing 13-7 (4.14m) after passing the first three heights. The 2014 NCAA indoor champion finished in a four-way tie for first with the competition ending at that height.
Sophomore Reese Watson will make his second trip to the outdoor nationals in the pole vault. Watson needed to clear just three bars, including the eventual winning height of 17-7 (5.36m). He ended up tied for fourth in first-round action.
Senior Olivia Mickle, a first-year transfer from Brown, punched her ticket to nationals in the 10,000 meters, the final event of the day. Running in the lead pack from start to finish, Mickle finished fourth in the 48-woman semifinal in 34:08.53.
Just before Mickle advanced, freshman Fabian Jara Dohmann survived a four-plus hour javelin event. The freshman, who won the Big 12 javelin title two weeks ago in his first collegiate meet, nearly did not make the first round final after entering as the second seed. He needed a toss of 208-3 (63.39m) on this third attempt to reach the final. But he moved from 15th to fifth on his fifth attempt of the competition (second of the final) with a toss of 220-7 (67.25m), which was good enough to send him to the national meet.
Senoj-Jay Givans and Zack Bilderback were also able to survive first-round action in the sprints. Givans had the seventh-best time (10.28) in the 100 meters and Bilderback was eighth in the 400m in 46.28. The quarterfinal in both events is set for Friday.
Will Spence was unable to make his second-consecutive trip to outdoor nationals in the shot put. Spence was 17th in the first round with a toss of 57-8 1/4 (17.58m). The top 16 athletes after the first three attempts in throwing events head to finals (and three more tosses).
Spence still has an opportunity to reach the national meet. He will join Crouser and Blake Jakobsson in the first round of the discus which is scheduled for Saturday.
Friday's action at the NCAA West Preliminary Round starts at 10 a.m. Central, though the Longhorns are not in action until 5 p.m. when the running events get underway.
