EUGENE, Ore. – Johannes Hock was edged in his attempt to repeat as decathlon champion Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Oregon.
Hock held a slim 23-point lead heading into the 1,500 meters, the final event of the two-day competition, but was edged in the overall standings by Maciel Uibo of Georgia, who posted 8,182. Uido clocked a time of 4 minutes, 29 seconds to finish third in the 1,500.
Not his strongest event, Hock crossed the finish line in 4:46.83, which was 12th in the 1,500. The time difference gave Uibo a 113-point advantage. Hock ended up with 8,092 points and Dakota Keys of Oregon was third with 8,068.
"I just think it shows the level he is at that he has an average type meet, but he is still the second-best in the NCAA," head coach Mario Sategna said of Hock, who was competing in just his third collegiate decathlon.
Hock was seeking to become just the fourth athlete to repeat as NCAA decathlon champion.
"He'll walk away from here feeling defeated, but the decathlon is a different beast," Sategna said. "He went into the 1,500, not one of his strong points, in the lead. He gave it a shot for three laps and kind of fell off the pace at the end."
Hock added eight points to the total for the fifth-ranked men, who are third in the team standings after six scored events with 19.50. Oregon leads with 26 and Georgia is third (24).
The top-ranked Texas women haven't yet gotten on the scoreboard, but had another strong day of qualifying. The Longhorns sent five from running semifinals to finals on Wednesday and all three Thursday.
Morolake Akinosun advanced to her third final at the championships. Akinosun clocked a 23.00 to win her 100-meter semifinal heat and post the fourth-fastest time among the 24 entrants.
On Wednesday, Akinosun reached the final of the 100 meters and ran the anchor of the 4x100-meter relay, which also moved on to the final.
The Longhorns entered the meet with the top-ranked women's 4x400-meter relay in the nation and showed why on Thursday, despite competing without anchor leg Ashley Spencer who reinjured her left leg in Wednesday's 400-meter semifinal.
Briana Nelson, Kendall Basiden, Melissa Gonzalez and Courtney Okolo combined to post the top time in the 4x400 semifinal – 3:28.89.
Gonzalez, whose specialty is the 400-meter hurdles subbed for Spencer, running the third leg. Gonzalez had a comfortable lead when she took the baton and held onto it.
"It was big shows to fill running for Ashley but my goal was to get out there and run as hard as I could. Just help my team get to the finals," Gonzalez said. "Ashley was very supportive."
After Spencer was originally injured two weeks ago competing in the 4x100-meter relay at the NCAA West Preliminary Round, Akinosun was plugged into the quarterfinal of the 4x400m relay at that meet.
"To help maximize down the road tomorrow and Saturday with Morolake, we opted not to run her in the 4x400 and plug in Melissa," Sategna said. "She just hit the ball out of the park. But for us to compete for a team title, we need people to step up and that's what happened today."
Okolo, who set the collegiate record in the 400 meters at the last month's moved from the second leg to the anchor.
Morgan Snow continued her strong postseason. She was second in the 100-meter hurdles at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships and is in position to score in the event at nationals. Snow, who ran the opening leg of the 4x100 Wednesday, clocked a 13.00, the fifth-best time in the 100mh semifinal.
Hock, who held the lead through most of the decathlon, had the top mark in Thursday's discus, but struggled in the pole vault.
He remained in the leading after posting a mark of 160 feet, 7 inches (48.94m) in the discus, but fell to third overall with a clearance of just 14-5 1/4 (4.40m) in the pole vault, well off his outdoor personal-best of 15-9 1/4 (4.81m).
Hock rebounded nicely in the javelin, the ninth event, to move back into first place. Attempting a competitive javelin throw with his surgically repaired right arm for the first time since the 2013 NCAA Championships, Hock was just more than 8 feet off his career best. His first attempt traveled 198-1 (60.39) and second, his best, went 200-5 (61.08). Hock was 12th in the javelin.
"He gave it a chance," Sategna said. "We had some cool climate and off and on rains. It got tricky during the pole vault and we didn't maximize there. For being the first time throwing with his right arm, he did some great things. He hasn't even had a full year since the surgery. To get back to this level, my hat goers off to Johannes and everyone who has helped him along the way."
The Longhorns had just one opportunity to score Thursday. Olivia Mickle was in the final of the 10,000 meters and finished 16th, but in a school-record time of 33:33.30. The senior transfer from Brown competed in three 10,00-meter races this season and they all rank among the eight best performances in UT history. Mickle broke Sandy Blakeslee's school mark of 33:30.73, set on June 25, 1987.
Oregon leads the women's standings after five scored events with 19 points.
Friday's action at Hayward Field gets underway at 5:15 p.m. Central with the women's pole vault.

Longhorn Notes
• Last season, Johannes Hock became just the second freshman to win the NCAA decathlon title (Tito Steiner of BYU, 1977) when he posted the ninth-best total in collegiate history (8,267). This year he was seeking to become only the fourth athlete to repeat as champion. Previous repeat decathlon champions include Rob Muzzio of George Mason (1984-85), Jake Arnold of BYU (2007-07) and Ashton Eaton of Oregon (2008-10). The decathlon has been an NCAA event since 1970.
• Johannes Hock is only the fourth Longhorn to score twice in the decathlon at the NCAA Championships and his 18 points over the last two years is a school record. Greg Hackney was eighth in 1972 and seventh two years later. Donovan Kilmartin was fourth in 2005 and fifth the next season. Isaac Murphy was seventh in 2012 and fourth last year. Trey Hardee's 10 points for winning the 2005 decathlon crown are the most in a Longhorn career.
• On Wednesday, the men's 4x100-meter relay was unable to advance to Saturday's final, but this was just the second time in the last 11 years (also 2011) the Horns advanced both relay units to the national meet. The 4x400-meter relay did not make it out of Thursday's semifinals.
• With his tie for seventh showing on Wednesday, Reese Watson became the ninth Longhorn to score in the men's pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (Ralph Hammond, 1927; Baylus Bennett; Doug Jones, 1986; Warren Smith, 1990; Scotty Miller, 1991; Wayne Guidry, 1994; Jacob Davis, 1998-99; Brian Hunter, 2002; Maston Wallace, 2008). Davis (1999), Hunter and Wallace won NCAA titles.
• Senior Katie Hoaldridge capped off her career Wednesday. She finished 23rd in the 800-meter semifinal in 2:08.46. Hoaldridge, who was seeded No. 20 in the race and making her first appearance at a national meet, was a four-time All-Big 12 performer. She clocked a personal-best 2:05.68 at the NCAA West Preliminary Round to advance to the national meet.
• Senior Danielle Dowie finished her career Wednesday. Dowie did not advance out of the 400-meter hurdles semifinal. She finished 14th in 58.08 and ends her career as a 10-time All-American (six first team/four second team).
• Texas is the first team to advance three to the women's 400-meter final at the NCAA outdoor meet in 12 years, according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). South Carolina last did it in 2002 and went on to win the national title.
• Texas has won four NCAA shot put titles and Ryan Crouser has three of them. Crouser has won the last two outdoor crowns as well as the 2014 indoor title. Dana LeDuc captured the shot put at the 1977 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
