SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Former track and field standout Michelle Carter won the shot put title Wednesday at the USA Outdoor Championships.
Carter captured her fifth career national outdoor title and third in the last four years with a toss of 63 feet, 9 3/4 inches (19.45m). She led from start to finish and had her winning toss on her fourth of six attempts in the final. Felisha Johnson was second with a mark of 62-11 1/4 (19.18m).
A seven-time All-American with the Longhorns, Carter needed just one attempt to advance from Wednesday morning's qualifying round to the evening final. She had a toss of 60-9 1/2 (18.53m) on her first try to automatically qualify for the final.
The four-day meet does not officially begin until Thursday at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State, but the men's and women's shot put competitions were held Wednesday on the lawn of Sacramento's state Capitol building.
Carter won her first national outdoor shot put title in 2008, the year after her final season at Texas. She won again in 2009 and 2011, and then set the meet and American record of 66-5 (20.24) in last year's victory.
Ryan Crouser would have been in line to follow up his NCAA outdoor shot put title with a U.S. crown, but was forced to miss the event due to a foot injury. Crouser's school-record toss of 70-2 1/2 (21.39m) posted in winning the Big 12 outdoor title ranks No. 6 on the 2014 world performer's list.
Hayden Baillio was the lone Longhorn in the men's shot put field. The eight-time All-American, who finished his UT career last season, was 17th in the qualifying round with a toss of 61-1.25 (18.62m).
Thursday will feature a number of Longhorns in action.
Current athletes Zack Bilderback, Kendall Baisden, Briana Nelson and Ashley Spencer will compete in the first round of the 400 meters.
Former athletes and Olympians Sanya Richards-Ross (400m), Bianca Knight (100, 200m), Leo Manzano (1,500m) and Trey Hardee will also be in action.
