SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The impressive performances at the USA Outdoor Championships continued Saturday for Track and Field at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State University.
Demonstrating his famous 'kick,' Leo Manzano won the second title in as many days by a former Longhorn athlete when he came from behind to claim the 1500-meter title in 3 minutes, 38.63 seconds.
Sanya Richards-Ross showed she has bounced back from toe surgery in the spring, finishing as the runner-up in the 400-meter final in a season-best 49.66. Frances McCorory ran a personal-best 49.48 and held off Richards-Ross down the final straightaway to claim the title. Those times are Nos. 1 and 2 in the world this year.
Briana Nelson, who competed in her final collegiate meet two weeks ago, followed up a personal-best 51.05 in Friday's 400m semifinal by clocking 51.10 in the final to finish sixth. The 10-time first-team All-American had the best finish among collegians in the final.
Manzano claimed his second U.S. outdoor 1,500m title with one of his patented comebacks. Among the top five over the first three laps, Manzano made a move with 200 meters left and had to chase down Pat Casey who had moved ahead the pack heading down the final straightway. Manzano took the lead with about 30 meters left and held on. Casey was second in 3:38.94 and Lopez Lomong third (3:39.11).
Manzano won the event during 2012 Olympic Trials and went on to capture the silver medal at the London Games. Manzano was the runner-up in the 1,500 at the 2013 USA Outdoors.
Richards-Ross, who was seeking her seventh U.S. outdoor title in the 400, matched the world-leading time (50.03) of Courtney Okolo in Friday's semifinal.
The Longhorns now have five top-three finishes at the 2014 USA Outdoor Championships.
Trey Hardee easily won the decathlon, rolling up 8,599 points over the 10 events on Thursday and Friday. It was Hardee's second U.S. outdoor title (also 2009).
Marielle Hall was third in the 5,000 meters Friday night in a school-record 15:12.79. She cut more than six seconds off her previous UT mark.
Michelle Carter won the shot put Wednesday.
The meet concludes Sunday with Shanay Briscoe competing in the high jump and Bianca Knight in the 200 meters.
