SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Texas Longhorns placed their stamp on the 2014 USA Track and Field Championships as three former athletes won titles and another had a runner-up finish during the five-day meet held at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State University.
Michelle Carter (shot put), Trey Hardee (decathlon) and Leo Manzano (1,500 meters) all secured victories and three other Longhorns finished among the top four, including a second-place showing by Sanya Richards-Ross in the 400 meters.
In the first event of the competition, Carter easily won the shot put on Wednesday. She captured her fifth career national outdoor title and third in the last four years with a toss of 63 feet, 9 3/4 inches (19.45m). That event was held in a unique setting, on the lawn of Sacramento's state Capitol building.
Hardee was the story on Thursday and Friday, leading from the first event to the last in the decathlon. He tallied 8,599 points to claim his second U.S. national title in the event.
On Saturday, Leo Manzano used his famous kick to chase down Pat Casey in the final of the 1,500 meters to earn his second U.S. outdoor crown. Manzano passed Casey with about 30 meters left, winning in a time of 3 minutes, 38.63 seconds.
Richards-Ross is well on the road to recovery from toe surgery three months ago. The four-time Olympic gold medalist was second in Saturday's 400-meter final in a season-best 49.66, the second-fastest time in the world this year. Only Frances McCorory who the race in a personal-best 49.48 has run faster this year.
"It was great to see what some of our former athletes were able to do over the last few days," head coach Mario Sategna said.
The meet concluded Sunday, though just two Longhorn athletes were in action. Bianca Knight was seventh in the 200-meter final in 22.93 and Shanay Briscoe competed in the high jump, but was unable to clear a bar. The high jump started at 5-10 3/4 (1.80) and five of the 15 competitors did not get past the opening height.
Two seniors who just concluded their Longhorn careers made solid showings.
Marielle Hall was third in the 5,000 meters Friday night in a school-record 15:12.79. The 2014 NCAA outdoor 5,000-meter champion cut more than six seconds off her previous UT mark.
Briana Nelson followed up a personal-best 51.05 in Friday's 400-meter semifinal by clocking 51.10 in Saturday's final to finish sixth. Nelson, a 10-time first-team All-American, had the best finish among collegians.
"It was a great meet for Marielle and Briana," Sategna said
Kaitlin Petrillose continued her impressive 2014 season. The lone collegian among 16 competitors in Friday's pole vault, Petrillose, a junior, finished fourth by clearing 14-7 1/4 (4.45m), the third-best performance in school history. She won the title at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Sophomore Morolake Akinosun also reached the semifinal of the 100 meters.
"This was a tremendous experience for all our athletes. This is a chance to compete against our nation's best," Sategna said.
