EUGENE, Ore. – Kendall Baisden followed up her gold-medal performance in the 400 meters with another winning effort in Sunday's final of the 4x400-meter relay at the IAAF World Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Two days after winning the 400-meter title, the freshman anchored the U.S. 4x400m relay unit, which won in 3 minutes, 30.42 seconds on the final day of action at Oregon's Hayward Field.
Great Britain was second in 3:32.00 and Germany third (3:33.02).
Baisden took the baton from Shakima Whimbley of Miami (Fla.) with a 5-meter advantage on Great Britain. Baisden maintained the lead, but was challenged on the final turn though held on for the victory, the seventh-straight for the Americans in the event. Baisden has been a part of the last two, running a leg on the winning unit in 2012.
She won gold in Friday's 400 meters in a time of 51.85. Baisden was pushed on the final turn in that race as well, but fended off Gilda Casanova of Cuba who ended up second in 52.59.
Baisden has had quite a bit of success at this venue in 2014. She was third in the 400 and a member of both the 4x100m relay (third) and victorious 4x400m relay and at last month's NCAA Outdoor Championships. She also won the 400-meter title at the USA Junior Championships held earlier this month.
The Longhorns now have the last two world junior 400-meter gold medalists on the roster. Junior Ashley Spencer, who spent her first two seasons as the University of Illinois, won the 400-meter crown in 2012 while with the Illini. Spencer also joined Baisden on that winning 4x400 relay two years ago.
Baisden entered the meet first on this year's 400-meter world junior performance list and fifth all-time on the world junior performer's chart. She clocked a personal-best 50.46 at the 2014 Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
The IAAF World Junior Championships has been held every two years since 1986 and feature athletes who will not have reach 20 years old by Dec. 31, 2014.
