EUGENE, Ore. – One week after three former athletes won titles at the USA Outdoor Championships, the Track and Field team sent 11 current or future athletes into action at the USA Junior Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
The two-day meet began Saturday at Hayward Field, site of last month's NCAA Outdoor Championships, and five of the seven Texas entries in running events advanced to finals highlighted by freshman Kendall Baisden who was third in the first round of the 400 meters.
Carlton and Charles Anumnu each produced a personal best in the first round of the 100 meters. Charles Anumnu clocked a time of 10.48 seconds and Carlton Anumnu crossed the finish line in 10.51 to advance to the final, which was held Saturday night. Carlton Anumnu had the better time in the final, finishing sixth in 10.56. Charles Anumnu was seventh in 10.60.
Freshman Spencer Dunkerley-Offor had the fourth-best qualifying time in the first round of the 110-meter hurdles, clocking a wind-aided (4.2 meters-per-second) 13.55.
Freshman Robert Uhr ran a career-best 1:50.79 in the first round of the 800 meters. He won heat three to automatically qualify for Sunday's final.
After clocking 53.74 to win the second of three 400-meter first-round heats, Baisden will look to add to the Longhorn title total at this year's national meets during Sunday's final. Baisden finished third in the 400 at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor meet.
Michelle Carter (shot put), Trey Hardee (decathlon) and Leo Manzano (1,500 meters) all captured titles at the USA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, California.
Incoming freshman Barrett Poth finished eighth in the pole vault with a season-best clearance of 16 feet, 6.75 inches (5.05m).
