EUGENE, Ore. – Kendall Baisden continued her impressive freshman season by capturing the 400-meter title Sunday, the final day of action at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
Baisden's victory at the two-day meet featuring U.S.-born athletes under the age of 20 was one of a number of strong efforts over the last two weeks on the national stage by members of the Texas track and field program.
Former UT athletes Michelle Carter (shot put), Trey Hardee (decathlon) and Leo Manzano (1,500 meters) all captured titles at last week's USA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, California.
Baisden clocked a time of 52.21 seconds to edge Olivia Baker (52.46) and Shakima Wimbley of the University of Miami (52.55).
Spencer Dunkerley-Offor had a career-best performance with his fourth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles final. Dunkerley-Offor clocked a time of 13.58, which ranks No. 8 on the UT all-time performance list. He also moved from tied for seventh to fourth on the school's all-time performer's list.
Incoming freshman Chyna Ries showed she is ready to compete at the collegiate level, finishing third in the long jump with a mark of 20 feet, 10 3/4 inches (6.37m). She missed first place by a 1/2 inch and was only bettered by a pair of qualifiers for the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Jazmin McCoy of Nebraska won with a wind-aided leap of 20-11 1/4 (6.38m) and Quanesha Burks of Alabama was second with the same mark. McCoy was sixth in the long jump and Burks 18th at last month's NCAA meet, which was held at the same venue.
One day after posting a personal-best 1:50.79 in the first round of the 800 meters, Robert Uhr finished eighth in the final, crossing the finish line in 1:51.54
Two more incoming freshmen competed in Sunday's women's pole vault. Kally Long finished fifth with a clearance of 13-3 1/2 (4.05m) and Shay Petty was tied for eighth with a mark of 12-5.50 (3.80m).
During opening-day action Saturday, Charles Anumnu (10.48) and Carlton Anumnu (10.51) posted personal bests in the first round to reach the 100-meter final. Carlton Anumnu was sixth (10.56) and Charles Anumnu seventh (10.60) in the final.
