Gilbert and Brook each register career-best two goals for the Longhorns.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas senior defender Brooke Gilbert and freshman forward Olivia Brook each registered the first two-goal matches of their careers, and sophomore forward Jasmine Hart dished three assists as the Longhorns (2-0-2) cruised past Nevada (0-3-1), 5-1, on Sunday afternoon in front of 1,214 at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

UT dominated the stats, out-shooting the Wolf Pack by a commanding 26-9 total, including 15-2 in the second stanza. Texas also managed a 12-6 advantage in shots on frame and led in corners by a staggering 11-1 total. The scoring output marked the first five-goal match for Texas since back on Aug. 28, 2011, vs. Cal State Northridge.

Junior forward Chantale Campbell joined Gilbert and Brook in the scoring column by contributing her first goal of the campaign, while junior midfielder Sharis Lachappelle, sophomore midfielder Julia Dyche, sophomore midfielder Katie Gernsbacher and junior midfielder Lindsey Meyer each recorded one of the Longhorns' seven overall assists. Junior goalkeeper Abby Smith was forced to make five more saves, improving her stop total to 17 through the opening four matches of 2014.

"I thought we did a better job, certainly the beginning of the second half, but a better job of controlling our space, organizing our passing patterns and getting in more of a rhythm," Texas head coach Angela Kelly said. "Just being in control of the game. When you have conditions like you had today -- very hot, very humid -- it was very important that we controlled the rhythm of the match. I thought our players did a great job."

Texas wasted no time getting untracked offensively as the 'Horns had the run of play in the early going with Hart and Chantale Campbell working strongly up the left wing and delivering promising crosses into the box.

Hart managed the first shot of the match for either squad as her effort from 14 yards out in the middle of the 18 was saved on a dive by Nevada keeper Devyn Bryar.

The offensive fireworks began in earnest during the 17th minute as Texas got on the board for a 1-0 advantage. Dyche took a corner, delivering a feed towards the far post that was headed by Meyer straight back across the goal mouth to Gilbert. Unmarked just six yards out from goal, she easily beat Bryar for the first tally of the match.

The advantage expanded to two scores just 50 seconds later as a beautiful pass from Hart found the foot of an onrushing Campbell, and she finished from 12 yards.

There's an old saying that a soccer team is never more at risk of giving up a goal than in the minute just after scoring, and for Texas that unfortunately proved prophetic. Nevada raced down the pitch on the re-start, working a give-and-go that saw Daisha Jones-Oglesby feed Chrisalyn Fonte to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The score didn't seem to faze the Horns as the offense continued its immense pressure on the Wolf Pack goal. After shots by Meyer and Dyche were blocked and traveled high of frame, respectively, Hart ripped off two drives in quick succession. The Haltom City, Texas, product's second shot at 24:11 forced a team save by Nevada in clearing a sure goal off the line.

It wasn't long before Brook restored the Horns' two-goal lead. Following a beautiful two-pass connection between Hart and Gernsbacher, the Houston, Texas, native headed home a cross into the upper left corner of the goal in the 38th minute.

The second stanza proved even more dominant in favor of UT as the Longhorns were credited with the first 14 shots of the final 45 minutes.

Searching for more on the scoreboard during the 51st minute, Lachappelle delivered a perfect cross from the right wing towards the far post where Gilbert was lying in wait. The defender leapt high over her marker, heading the ball off the underside of the crossbar and into the far side of the netting to make it 4-1.

Just 1:08 later Hart found herself in space about 20 yards out at the top of the box. She unleashed a shot that was parried by Bryar right back out into the middle of the pitch. Brook didn't let the ball drop, volleying a drive past the keeper for UT's fifth score.

Texas head coach Angela Kelly made use of an extensive bench down the stretch in the second half as the Longhorns continued to press their advantage to no further avail. Emilie Campbell, Brinkley Field, Chelbi Orrick and Erin Geiger each drew their first playing time of the season, with Orrick and Geiger's action also marking the first of their careesr.

UT ventures back out on the road for its next match on Fri., Sept. 5, as the Longhorns travel to Corpus Christi, Texas, to battle Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. Central. The next home date at Mike A. Myers Stadium is set for Sunday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Central against Montana.
