Sophomore Pippa Horn and freshman Danielle Wagland defeat nationally-ranked opponents on final day in Waco.
WACO, Texas – Texas produced three singles victories, including two over nationally-ranked opponents, on the final day of competition Sunday in the Under Armour Kick Off at Baylor's Hurd Tennis Center.
Freshman Danielle Wagland scored a significant upset with her straight-sets win over USC's 59th-ranked Zoe Katz. The Australian took down Katz by a 6-1, 6-2 count.
Sophomore Pippa Horn added an impressive win herself over a nationally-ranked opponent from USC, the 106th-ranked Gabby DeSimone. The Englishwoman made short work of DeSimone and prevailed by a 6-0, 6-3 count.
Junior Lana Groenvynck added the third straight-sets singles win for the Longhorns with her 6-4, 6-2 win over Texas A&M's Eva Paalma.
"We got the to chance to measure ourselves against some of the best competition in the nation in our first tournament of the year," said UT interim head coach Darija Klaic. "The girls competed hard, learned a lot and elevated their level of play each day. Their commitment really shone through. We were tested in a few tough three-set matches early on and it was great to finish off the tournament with convincing two set victories against nationally-ranked players."
UT resumes fall tournament play on Sept. 27 at the ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles.
