Longhorns claim 11 events to defeat the Tigers, await strong challenge at No. 3 Georgia on Saturday.
AUBURN, Ala. – No. 1 Texas (4-1) won 11 of 16 events and put away a 156-135 victory over host No. 10 Auburn Thursday afternoon at the Tigers' James. E. Martin Aquatics Center. The Longhorns posted their first victory at Auburn in three years and chalked up their second straight win over the Tigers after winning last season in Austin. UT clinched the team victory with three events remaining and declined its allotted points the rest of the meet.
Texas opened the meet with a tight win in the 200-yard medley relay, where senior Kip Darmody, junior John Murray, freshman Joseph Schooling and freshman Brett Ringgold were victorious in 1 minute, 27.88 seconds. Sophomore Clark Smith followed with a huge swim in the 1,000 freestyle and took the win in 9:01.09. good for the second-fastest time in the country this season. Seniors Jake Ritter and Nic Munoz took second and third in 9:22.97 and 9:24.28, respectively.
Senior Clay Youngquist led a one-two-three Texas finish in the 200 freestyle and took the win in 1:37.21. Freshman Jonathan Roberts took a close second in 1:38.02 while junior Sam Lewis placed third at 1:38.55. Sophomore Jack Conger notched the Horns' fourth consecutive swimming victory and claimed the 100 backstroke in 48.10.
Auburn claimed the 100 breaststroke but Texas continued its winning ways in the 200 butterfly, where junior John Martens posted a convincing win in 1:47.36. Senior Tripp Cooper added a third-place mark of 1:49.94. Ringgold posted the first of two sprint victories on the day and captured the 50 freestyle in 20.16 before claiming the 100 freestyle later on in 44.14. Sophomore Will Licon ran down Auburn's Michael Duderstadt in the final 50 yards of the 200 breaststroke and was victorious by just over a tenth of a second in 1:58.29.
Lewis led from start-to-finish in the 500 freestyle on his way to an easy victory in 4:27.48. Schooling added a win in the 100 butterfly at 47.59. All-America sophomore Mark Anderson put up a strong performance in the one-meter diving event and took the win with 384.30 points. All-America junior Cory Bowersox took a close second on the three-meter board with 398.93 points.
Texas wraps its road swing Saturday morning with a visit to No. 3 Georgia. The meet is set for an 11 a.m. ET start (10 a.m. CT) at UGA's Gabrielsen Natatorium.
