Jim West Invitational
Women's Golf finishes in fifth at Jim West Challenge
10.06.2015 | Women's Golf
Junior Haley Mills led the Longhorns in a tie for fifth.
BOERNE, Texas – Texas Women's Golf finished the Jim West Challenge in fifth place on Tuesday at Tapatio Springs Golf Club.
The Longhorns shot a third-round 285, the lowest round for any team on the day.
Junior Haley Mills led Texas, finishing in a tie for fifth after shooting a third-round 69 with three birdies.
Mills' 69 matches her career-low round, recorded during the 2014-15 season.
Sophomore Sophia Schubert also shot a 69 with four birdies and one bogey to end in a tie for 11th.
Junior Julia Beck shot even par for the third round to finish in a tie for 23rd, while freshman Maddie Luitwieler tied for 30th and senior Tezira Abe finished 60th.
For Texas, the top-five finish marks the best finish since ending in second at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic in March of 2015.
Kent State won the Jim West Challenge at 12-under par, while Texas Tech's Gabby Barker and Kent State's Michaela Finn shared medalist honors at 5-under par.
Texas will be back in action to host the Betsy Rawls Invitational at UT Golf Club on Monday, Oct. 19 and Tuesday, Oct. 20. The event will be televised on Longhorn Network.
Post-Tournament Comments
Head Coach Ryan Murphy
On the tournament: It's always nice to finish with the lowest round of the day at any tournament and today the golf course played the toughest. Three-under par was a strong round today.
We had some nice individual showings, so I am very pleased with that. Haley had a bogey-free final round 69 that got her into the top five. And Sophia's 69 brought her back to 11th. Both are extremely talented players and will have many more strong showings.
I was also happy with Julia's 72 and 73 that she shot to help our team this week. She didn't have her "A" game this week, but managed to get some good scores of it.
Additionally, Maddie Luitwieler's 72 in round two was really nice for us as well. As a true freshman, Maddie is doing great and will continue to get better and better. She has no shortage of desire and she's not afraid to work really hard.
Overall, we are moving in the right direction and I am looking forward to the Betsy Rawls in two weeks.
